Moving from Virgin to Sky (Install Questions)

Hello. I currently have Virgin Media and we're thinking of moving to Sky. The virgin box that sits outside is on our front room external wall but last year we had our front room redecorated and had the Virgin cable screwed in but then extended through and to a different part of the house so we could move the router. If we moved to Sky would we still be able to use the same cable and router location? Or do Sky use a completely different installation method.

Totally different infrastructure, they don't use VM cables or cabinets at all.

If it's through Openreach then it will either be an underground cable or from a local telegraph pole, if you're in a Cityfibre area then it will be via their underground cable.

@TSavill11 Put your house number and postcode into the address checker here. Immediately beneath the table there will be a line stating what sort of FTTP is available, mine is overhead feed via the telegraph pole.

Our records show the following FTTP network service information for these premises:-Single Dwelling Unit Residential UG premises served by 2.5 Inch plastic duct 56.

Then yours will be underground and terminate in an external CSU (consumer service unit) on your wall, that will have an optical pigtail going through a drilled hole to an internal ONT (optical network terminal) which needs a powerpoint nearby. The ONT converts the incoming optical signal to an electrical signal which connects to the hub via an ethernet cable.

there's two external connection points on the outside. A Virgin box and a grey one to the right of it. (Can't upload a photo as it says it exceeds the maximum MB) The grey point on the right has a duct that's covered beneath it with nothing inside so I'm assuming that's Sky and has never been used?

If they bring Sky in to our house at this point it'll be next to Virgin, and I definitely can't use the same cable that we extended to move the router?

if I understand correctly the new Sky router will have to sit where it's brought in and need a socket close by

Couldn't answer the question about the external box, even if I could see a picture probably.

Definitely can't use the VM cable but FTTP uses just a standard Cat5e or above ethernet cable so the hub can be placed anywhere that suits as long as it's got it's own power socket.

You may have some say where the internal box goes, but you'll need to talk to them when they come out. You do need a 3 pin socket for the ONT as optical cables don't carry power.

If that's telecoms then it's Openreach, not 'Sky'. ISPs on the Openreach network don't install their own ducts or cabling.

(assuming you are in the UK)
