topic Broadband speed in Broadband

We have the 2.5g broadband and the speed is shocking, worse than previous. Its fine if your sitting in the lounge, near the hub, but if you move to the kitchen (open plan) 20ft away, we are only getting 450 upload, upstairs is worse. The fact the WiFi only gives us the advertised download when sitting next to it is shocking. Please tell us what we can do, as our old hub, never had this problem.

@Funk assume you mean you have Sky's 2.5Gb/s broadband. The reason why WiFi speeds fall as you move further from the hub is simple physics. The inverse square law dictates that double the distance means signal strength drops by a factor of 4. Add in most homes are fairly WiFi unfriendly as they contain people, furniture and worst of all internal walls all of which affect the WiFi signal. No ISP promises the Broadband connection speed will be available in every room. Sky's WiFi Max package which is included in your contract only offers a guaranteed 25Mb/s. .

In practice however very few applications can use much more than 100Mb/s so apart from managing very large files or running speed tests it should not affect day-to-day usage. If you are routinely uploading and downloading multi gigabyte files use a wired connection to the 10Gb/s port on the hub. These very high speed services really only make sense in homes with many users. Sky sell them because there is a demand but like cars with top speeds over 200mph there is littlle practical requirement.
