Gigafast Plus Hub

Hi,

I’m currently a Sky Broadband customer and I also pay for the Sky WiFi Max add-on.

I wanted to ask if it’s possible to upgrade my router to the new Gigafast+ hub (the WiFi 7 router with the 10Gbps ports), as I would benefit from the faster speeds and wired connectivity for work purposes.

Could you please let me know:

Whether I’m eligible to upgrade to the Gigafast+ router on my current plan
Or if not, whether I can purchase or request this router separately

I’ve also been experiencing very poor WiFi in my bedroom, so I’d appreciate help improving coverage. If upgrading isn’t possible, could you:

Arrange for Sky WiFi Max Pods (boosters) to be sent out, or
Advise on the best way to get them under my WiFi Max guarantee

As I’m already paying for WiFi Max, I’d prefer to resolve this through Sky rather than buying a third‑party router.

Thanks for your help—I’d really appreciate any options you can offer.

You're only talking to other customers here but the answer is probably still no and no to the questions about the Sky Gigafast+ Hub (wifi 7 capable). That hub is only available to people who can get and who take up their 2.5 & 5Gbps service via the CityFibre network. Openreach networks can't handle those speeds. They don't sell it to anyone.

They will send upon request one wifi max pod extender which should be placed halfway between the router and the weak spot in your wifi network (the router is best placed in a central position perhaps). If you need more they'll send out an engineer who can check and advise the best setup and positioning for your particular home environment. They will fit extra pods if needed up to a total of 3 pods.

Normally I'd recommend a 3rd party mesh system and turning off the Max(?) hub wifi but when I've checked on my account, the wifi Max add-on is a 24 month contract so you may be locked in unless you just take the hit.

Edit: I should have added you'll need to contact them to request the 1st pod.

Thank you u for your help. If I buy a router my self can I take away sky router totally and con e t my internet to mt wan port o. My new router or do I need to keep tge sky router and turn it into a modem only. ?

@jonsutherland76 Sky hubs do not have modem modes.

You need to ensure that any router you buy is MER (Option 60/61) compatible as that is what Sky use on the UK networks.

If you don't use the landline then you can remove the hub and use your own router.

Keep the hub for diagnostic use in the case of faults as it would need returning to Sky if you left them anyway.

I thought the MER (Option 60/61) requirement was down to around just 20% of it's UK user base now (the rest using IPv6), dependant on the age of the local exchange? Not that there's any way to tell what you're on without trying it personally.

To be honest I don't know the percentage I'm still on MER on a recent FTTP install.
