Changing SSID and Password on new router

Hi I'm upgrading to full fibre tomorrow and have a new hub. Is it possible (or sensible) to change to SSID and password of the new router to the same the old router so device settings do not need updating? Thanks

There is nothing stopping you from doing this, you just need to login to the hub to change the SSID.

I have never done it myself as while I had a replacement hub recently I just set up my devices again with the new network name and password. I would have thought if you are going to be using the same SSID and password then they should connect to it as they did to the previous one.

@AntEarl if you change the SSID and password to match your old router your devices should connect without further work. My own networks uses the details from a router I switched out 4 years back. Eaxh time I getva new one I just use the old details but I am incredibly lazy.😀

If you don't mind me asking, did you change the SSID for both the 2.4 and 5Ghz channels? I've only been able to change the 2.4Ghz channel so far, but would like to have the two channels running on the same SSID so that devices can pick and choose for themselves which channel they choose to communicate on.

I've tried to do this keeping the old passwords but it doesn't work it blocks me out every time? WHY is this kind regards Steve

Are you connecting to PC to the router via ethernet cable?

Are you also changing the SSID?

It's over a year ago since I did this but I'm sure I had my PC connected by cable to the router...worth a try?

@plumbbob 0k things are becoming clearer changing the SSID and password using a device connected by WiFi will disconnect your device after you apply the change.. You need to log back in using your new details to get reconnected. This doesnt happen if you use a device connected by Ethernet.
