For information: on FTTC this is called Dynamic Line Management (DLM)

As @Chrisee says, it doesn't exist for FTTP because optical cable has no 'signal to noise' ratio, but for some reason Sky feels it necessary to perpetuate the myth.

Just got a message that my broadband will be connected today. And that a 10-day testing period will follow

The router is in my house, still in the box, as they asked. I won't be home to install it for 11 days.

Will the 10 day testing period start anyway, or when I first connect the router?

@erniec the concept of a 10day testing period is not strictly true for partial fibre connections and definitely false for full fibre connections. Sky use this as a convenience to cut the number of calls. Suspect they measure that from activation.

Partial fibre connections do take a few days to optimise speeds which can only start once you plug in the hub. What is happening is an automatic system monitors the line for errors and noise level for 24 hours if these are below a pre-programmed level the system will increase the speed by a few Mb/s overnight and the process repeats each day. This never stops but most lines reach a stable speed however speds can be varied up or down if conditions change.

With full fibre the speed once connected fully is fixed.
