I have a rural property with a old BT phone line and very poor download speed (23Mbps) and an upload speed of 2Mbps. I am paying for Sky Superfast broadband (£48 per month) but cannot obtain superfast broadband due to the line limitations.

I want to reset a 2 year contract with Sky for broadband but its pointless me paying for superfast. So my two questions are:

1) How can i contact Sky to do this as I can't seem to get through on the virtual assistant?

2) Surley I should have been paying for superfast broadband for the last 2 years when the line wasn't suitable to receive?

Thank you Will

To contact sky you call 150 from the landline, speak to CS and see what they can do for you, discount's you have already had so if you don't like the offer be prepared to move, no going back to sky once they give you a price and you say let me think about it! Bluff and double Bluff no longer works!

Superfast speeds are from 10Mb/s and up, even less if you cannot get the 10!

@tttyyyppoorr wrote:

2) Surley I should have been paying for superfast broadband for the last 2 years when the line wasn't suitable to receive?

23/2Mbs in/out is an FTTC speed (ADSL has a maximum of 1.4Mbs upload even on a very short line to the exchange)

FTTC has historically been marketed as 'Superfast' no matter what the line speed at a particular address actually is: this is permitted by both Ofcom and the ASA.

You might find an ISP willing to offer a slight discount for provisioning on 40/10 rather than 80/20 wholesale bands, but typically they don't pass their (very small) cost saving on to subscribers.

Superfast speeds are from 10Mb/s and up, even less if you cannot get the 10!

I believe Ofcom now says it should be used as a description for 30Mbs+ but that hasn't always been the case. Historically it was just a generic term for non-technical customers to differentiate between ADSL and FTTC.

It's this confusion which finally led them to insisting ISPs refer to 'part-fibre' and 'full-fibre'.
