I'm a Sky broadband customer (obviously), not currently on full fibre.

I currently have the Sky Q hub but Sky have said they are sending me the upgraded Hub 4.2 as a FOC upgrade.

My questions are as follows:

1. Do I HAVE to connect the new hub as I don't have any issues with the Sky Q hub albeit I appreciate it's old.

2. Are there any differences between the two that I will notice with performance e.g is it worth installing the newer hub if I don't have to.

Thanks.

Q Hubs no longer meet UK regulations for routers because they ship with a fixed weak local admin password. The model also doesn't support Sky Talk Internet Calls.

2. Are there any differences between the two that I will notice with performance e.g is it worth installing the newer hub if I don't have to.

The Sky Broadband Hub has two more ethernet ports, and is a rather better shape for WiFi: it's still gigabit and WiFi 5 though.

So other than a few extra antenna for WiFi and Ethernet ports (I only use one) I won't notice any difference if I switched to the newer hub?

If you use your Sky landline at some point in the next couple of years it will switch to being digital that requires the new hub to work.

Thanks all for your replies.

I've received the new hub and installed it. WiFi coverage/signal strength has improved throughout the house.

One thing I have noticed is when using the service checker tool on the Sky app I receive a 'check connection' message as it says my speed to hub is unknown and I get a grey circle as opposed to a green one. Any ideas? Does it take a while to settle or something?

If you are concerned about speed you can checkmthe connection speed in the hub's web interface see Sky Hub statistics

@Mike9_LO I found the same but others have said not, the move from sky Q hub to the sky Broadband Hub that the general wireless wifi signal was improved throughout the home, and i even added a SE210 after that to hit a few blind spot's that the SR had trouble trying to get to, have always kept the main hub same place for many years, it's not in the optimal position but i did not gain much speed for the optimal so were it is was far more a benefit for the wiring side, so flipped the operation and stuck the SE in the central location and lived with speed, with at that time on FTTC and a 40/10Mb/s did not really matter. Still have my old sky Q hub and keep it as a backup to the backup of the SR now, really not much difference when you web manage both units as look and feel is virtualy identical!

My second SR203 on return to sky Mar 2025 was a refurbed unit, did not mind too much as it was not going to stay on the connection for too long, kept it on about 6 weeks or so just to check and all was well, just one off those things new is nice because you get to know how they do, my original was on from 2019 to the 2024 period so worked well for that whole period! Refurbed you have no history and it was a poor unit all scratched and real dirty so either was not even looked at or just packed and sent out!
