Using ubiquiti edge router

Hi all

i I can see a few threads mentioning ubiquiti but nothing specific to the edge router 4.

I bought this recently to try to get more control over my home network. Should have researched what brand of router to buy for sky first but too late now.

anyone had any success using this router either behind the sky router or replacing it? I wasted a whole weekend trying to get it running but failed. Chat GPT led me round the houses.

Any advice gratefully received (even if it's give up!)

@Sct40 What is you sky connection FF FTTP or a copper FTTC OR Master socket, do you need to maintain the sky Talk landline?

Good question about the age, hadn't realised that. Have Unifi access points so I guess thought may as well go with same brand. Read some reviews but not enough clearly!

wasn't planning anything major, just had been getting some issues with my home network with losing connection to Sonos, tado etc so thought a better router might help.

I think I will try and return the router and start from scratch.

@Sct40 As long as the router you select is DHCP option 60/61 (MER) compatible (UK not Ireland) you can connect the cable from the ONT to it without using the Sky hub

@Sct40 Ubiquiti kit is not the simplest to set up but there are in fact two possible ways to connect one of their routers to a Sky line.

The simplest is to configure the unit to use DHCPv6 PD which requires no log in and works on 80+% of Openreach lines and 100% of City Fibre lines. The second is the dreaded DHCPv4 Option61 which most Ubquiti units should support here yiu need a log in string anything@skydsl|anything which works on every UK Sky line

Have sacked off the ubiquiti router and decided to try a different one. I have seen a few threads about this and will obviously do a bit more research than last time...

Just in case anyone is lurking and wants to give a recommendation then I would be grateful 🙂.

Don't need WiFi but I guess most will come with it. Would prefer a good basic UI rather than something more complex or CLI (I'm a newbie, clearly). Price not the biggest concern. Ideally one that will work out the box. Just want something that I can do a bit of tinkering with and see if I can stabilise my home network (2 tp link switches), tado, Sonos, lightwave, Unifi access points amongst the other usual stuff

@Sct40 Just buy yourself a cheap Asus router as you are doing wired AP's i assume disable all the wireless on it, just watch the number off ports you require on the router!

Also some other newer Unifi gateways non wireless mode that would be better!

How about an asus ebg15? Am I asking for trouble by getting a business oriented one? Its just I don't need any wifi as that comes from APs.

Got slightly conflicted info about whether it definitely supports DHCP 60/61 but seems to.

Anyone running one?

Similar topic... I have just switched to sky and have FTTP and a sky hub.
I need more control over my network and have several ubiquiti access points and a Ubiquiti Cloud Ultra.
I tries connecting the Ultra directly to the ONT but couldn't get that to work

So I have been trying to connect to the hub (i,e. ONT > hub > ultra > switch).
Once the cable is in place the Ultra recognises the connection but doesn't appear to be assigned an IP address and the Ultra itself and the consiole just show that there is no internet.

Is there an issue with the Hub not liking the idea of connecting to the Ultra? It's fine with other devices. I even tried cloning the MAC address of a device the Sky Hub trusts but it didn't work. Any suggestions?

@Chrisee I tried changing the settings to DHCPv6 PD and then connected directly to the ONT but the display still showed 'no internet' on the device and the console equally showed no internet connection. Should the connection have been fairly instant or should I have left it for a while? Is there any way to know if I am one of the 20% ? Is there a guide you could copy here about how to connect directly to the ONT? I think the Ultra 'should' work fine without the Hub.

@W11llf Question number 1, the sky Max hub that i think you have is only needed to be online first connection it's wan to the ONT lan if you must have a sky talk landline in operation, no phone then no need to have it up and working!

I got it up and running connected to the ONT. I don't use any VOIP and don't need that - only internet.

I haven't been able to connect my Ultra directly to the ONT and I haven't managed to insert it after the hub either.. for different reasons, I guess

@W11llf I would check the other settings as Ubquiti routers are complex to set up before deciding that the connection wont work. In particular leave the VLANID unselected as discussed here also check the firmware is reasonably recent as that thread points out later.

@W11llf Noy a unifi person but if you do search XT8 you will see how Asus is connected direct on the ONT from my pictures posted!

Also take a look at the video linked below. My Asus is NO auhentication using DHCP wan connected both iPv4 and iPv6 all working, three seperate ssid and full Ai mesh wired/wireless backhauls!
