I have GIG speed im connected to my hub via eithernet cable and im getting 400mb download!! Did a speed test on the 12th said i was getting just over 500mb ( got screen shot) checked today and it says I been getting 911 for the past 22 days? Somebody's lying!

@ITz-BarBz you are using a shared connection where a 2.48Gb/s downstream feeds up to 30 individual lines connected to your local distribution point. This is how Openreach's GPON fibre connection works which enables consumers to get much higher speeds while still paying reasonable prices. A dedicated 1Gb/s line would cost around 8 times more and even those can suffer from contention.

Statistically very few users use the full bandwidth they buy more than occasionally. In practice the speed reduction is only noticeable when running speed tests or doing large downloads. The speed result in your middle screnshot was timed at 19.33 which is during the peak period. The forum sees a number if similar reports and it is down to luck whether your area contains a number of heavy users or not.

Note this contention is in the Openreach network so affects all ISPs using the Openreach lines equally. There are trials going on the switch Openreach to a system called XGSPON which will allow the same fibre lines to potentially offer symmetrical 10Gb/s services which moves the issue further down the road. Sky already offer 5Gb/s servicesxover City Fibre lines which run XGSPON.
