Using MAP-T with own router (OpenWRT/Fritzbox)

Hi all,

I have Sky Broadband on an Openreach FTTP line (Huawei ONT so potentially Huawei OLT) and would like to try MAP-T. I've tried OpenWRT with the MAP packages installed (and a packet capture on my WAN interface seems to suggest the router is correctly sending option 95 in it's dhcp6 request message) but continue to get both native IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity rather than v6 only with MAP-T for v4.

I've also tried a Fritzbox 7530AX with the latest firmware and no matter which options I select in the web interface I end up with native IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity.

I know there were issues with clients using odhcp6 without the MAP-T capabilities, so have Sky done something to stop this from being an issue, therefore requiring different steps if wanting to use MAP-T with my own router?

I believe the upstream broadband delivery platform specifically looks for a Max Hub on the circuit and don't offer Map-T if that's not detected.

Thanks, that could well explain it and I can understand why this would have been done, given the issues people were encountering. It would be interesting to know if there's anything I can do to make my OpenWRT device request MAP-T in the same way a Sky Max Hub does, so I look forward to hearing from anyone who can confirm this.

Thanks for the reply. I'm specifically asking what the Sky Broadband platform is looking for to offer MAP-T. This will need to be answered by a Sky Employee (I can see some have been active in other threads on MAP-T queries), or someone else who has experience of having done this.

Hi @logsteel

Your understanding is correct, 3rd party CPEs that ask for MAP-T by including DHCPv6 Option 95, will get MAP-T, it's not limited to Sky Hubs.

However I believe MAP-T has been temporarily disabled on your line for unrelated reasons; I'll flick you a DM and we'll get it sorted.

For anyone who stumbles across this in the future MAP-T was disabled on my line for reasons not related to my router or setup. Following kind intervention from @-rpnz- above I'm now happily running native IPv6 with IPv4 over MAP-T. It works fine on both my OpenWRT router and a Fritzbox although there are some issues worth being aware of with OpenWRT which are fairly well documented.
