Sky Max Ending 2027?

Had 2 guys dressed in Sky garb with lanyards & tablet turn up at our door with no appointment. They advised me that Sky Max is ending in 2027 but we can transfer at no extra cost to full fibre just a £10 Engineer fee. We have not heard anything about this & neither has Sky call centre who wanted £40 pm for fibre. Is this for real? Many thanks all, Alan.

I suspect there has been a bit of miscommunication there. What the reps probably meant was that the UK PSTN telephone infrastructure is being switched off in 2027, however that does not mean your broadband with Sky will be affected.

What package do you currently have with Sky?

Which broadband package? What speeds do you get? I suspect the Sky rep was recommending you look at a move to Fibre because you are either on ADSL broadband or legacy FTTC with your landline still going over the PSTN lines instead of through the router on VOIP. The 2027 deadline is for anyone on a service that is still using the traditional landline and not on an SOGEA service or FTTP.

I think they were getting their sales pitch confused. 'Max' isn't itself a broadband connection product: it's a subscription supplement which adds Parental Control and 'free' booster loan to a Sky internet service (as Broadband Boost did previously)

The no extra cost move from ADSL/FTTC/G.fast to FTTP is absolutely a thing, because ISPs now get better wholesale pricing on optical connections than over legacy copper (and Openreach needs a better conversion rate to justify the billions it's spending on its infrastructure rollout)

TimmyBGood hi, many thanks for this. On their return this evening they admitted being from Unique & changed their pitch from earlier. They are doing exactly what you suggest & moving Customers from 'copper' to 'fibre'. The problem I have now is that Sky Customer Services can only offer the move at £40pm whilst the guys on the doorstep could do it for £29pm. Cheers Alan.

I don't recognise the name, but in general altnet ISPs can charge whatever they like: most are burning through start-up capital rather than living on subscription income. Openreach ISPs such as Sky have to cover a wholesale charge for circuit and bandwidth before adding their own costs and then (hopefully) making a sliver of profit on top. Openreach is, however, extremely unlikely to go bust tomorrow, which is a realistic risk for less established providers.
