It isnt a 'TP Link' as TP Link are a manufacturer, its powerline or home plugs. These devices rely on the quality of your electrical wiring so if thats poor or its a long run then you'll find it can be just as bad or worse then using WiFi.

Is the ethernet direct to the hub or is it through some sort of booster/extender/powerline adapter?

I have it through a TP link. That is connected through my attic to hub. I know people that have this set up and have no issues at all. I spoke with SKY yesterday, there's some kind of issue with my hub or line because the outside optical cable is running fine.
