@rtl wrote:

DNS PTR records are stored under the IP address with ".in-addr.arpa" added in IPv4, and they're stored under the IPv6 address, converted into four-bit sections with ".ip6.arpa" added in IPv6.

Quite possibly, but the PTR is not configured at an ISP level or on a router.

ISP DNS servers (and its own mail systems) should have access to such records, but they populate from the definitive nameserver for the domain (or a delegated nameserver specifically intended for reverse DNS lookup)

Sky is not a domain registrar and doesn't offer hosting, so has no involvement in the process other than appropriate lookups and routing.

PTR Records on Sky?

Hey! Thanks for viewing my post, I want to be able to add PTR records which will map my IP to my domain

and allow my mail server to function properly, I haven't found anything about PTR records on

home broadbands, so I don't expect sky to allow this so if this isn't possible, I will have to resort to changing my broadband all together or flashing custom firmware onto my router.

ISP routers aren't conducive to flashing: apart from other issues, it's loaned hardware.

No domestic ISP now offers fixed IP addresses to home users, so it's hardly surprising they don't offer information on address mapping.

Pointer records operate at the domain nameserver level anyway, not with an ISP.

If you wish to have a more flexible router then you need to be look at higher cost 3rd party equipment which you can use.

Incidentally, hosting a mail server behind a domestic IP address is a really good way to get it automatically blacklisted rather rapidly, because that screams 'spam engine' to everyone else's monitoring system.

If the server is where it should be (in a hosting centre) then it's the IP address within that host location which needs appropriate records in the nameserver for the domain.

@rtl As you haven't really explained what your trying to do then you can't expect fellow customers to know anything about this.

Are you hosting a webserver at home/using Sky broadband or hosting elsewhere on a dedicated server?

As explained you can't amend anything within a Sky hub so its rally not clear what you're trying to acheive.

You domain provider should allow MX & DNS records to be edited to point to a specific IP address and assuming your hosting your server at home using Sky domestic broadband srvice, I don't believe you need to mess around with anything on your hub.
