We have just recieved an email from open reach to say full fibre is available in our area now.
We have been on standard broadband for approx 3 years and can just about get 6mb/s so very poor indeed.
Iam interested in the ultrafast plus package and its saying upto 500mb/s
If i do order this can someone explain the process please regards to bt openreach coming out and what they need to do as we have not seen them laying any cable.
The property is approx 10 years old
Also would my current router work with fibre as it was the one they sent when we ordered sky q
Any help would be great

@panicbuy69 if your current phone line is delivered from a pole then the new fibre service is likely to follow the same route and you msy well not have noticed the fibre distribution points on the poles. If underground then the fibre will normally follow the same route.

If you order from Sky then they handle the switch over which should be seamless. You will be given a date for the installation which requires a home visit where you can discuss where you want the new ONT unit which replaces the phone socket. Its a small wall mounted white box which requires power. The engineer will drill a hole to the outside for the fibre pigtail cable which is used to connect to a small grey Customer Service Point box where the fibre cable from the road terminates which may have been fitted a few days before or on the same day.

Your existing SR203 Sky hub is the standard unit used for full fibre. Instead of a phone cable you will be sent a "conversion kit" which is simply a short ethernet cable thst the engineercwill use to connect from the ONT to the WAN port on the hub (doubles as LANport 4). The sevice will be demonstrated to you.

Couple of warnings first Sky do not always offer availability at the sametime Openreach email you itvcan take a few weeks before you can order. The voice services switches to being through the Hub and your phone extention points no longer work. On dome installs things go wrong on a switch from copper to fibre you should keep the old service until the new one is up and running but dates can slip.

Putting the address into the BT Wholesale Availability Checker should indicate which provisioning type is applicable.

would they have to dig road up

@panicbuy69 if roads need digging up thstvwould be organised by Openreach. Sky's engineers do final installs and some overhead work. If the road does need digging then it can take quite a while as the local authroity needs to give permission for the work. Hopefully a roding team can clear the duct without digging it up..

I have not ordered the sky fibre as yet as i am waiting for a call from sky tomorrow.
As i said i just about get 6mb/s as iam on standard broadband.
How good is sky with fibre to the house.
Iam looking at ordering the ultrafast plus package 500 mb/s

All FTTP over the Openreach network is essentially the same wholesale product in different speed bands: the difference is in pricing, support and the router hardware which each ISP offers.

As you are on adsl copper all the way back to the exchange all those options are open to you as they all will be through fibre optic. The choice is your's . Do you need 500Mbps right away. You could try any of the slower speeds and upgrade any time

Would it be better to buy a decent router or stick with my original one sky provided when we got sky q or go for the router they charge for

The one in the first image is the latest free router for your existing line and for fttp. It will struggle to give full 500Mbps and above via wifi to any single device.

Any asus rt ax wifi 6 router will replace the sky router but you will lose the sky internet calls . They can also be used alongside the sr203 in access point mode to mesh your house and have better coverage than the sky supplied wifi 5 booster boxes

On fttp all landline phones are plugged into the back of sr203 hub and are delivered via internet rather than the copper landline.

We do have a landline but the phone is never connected because we don't use it

So not worried if we lose this

So we ordered sky fibre ultrafast plus
The next day opened front door and BT have installed a new BT box on wall but no ONT box
The new box has a pipe running down with some sort of sponge inside the pipe any idea what this is
Also when sky come out to do there installation do they supply the ONT box.
