I have been trying to connect two computers over windows remote desktop and the app version . I know I have the right password but it will not accept it. I have allowed it past my firewall. some seem to think the router is blocking it or I have to configure the port forwarding on the router. Can someone tell me how to do that and if the router show blocked connections

thanks

For remote desktop to work the RDP needs to be forwarded through the router at the remote end.

This document explains the process of forwarding a port through the Sky router for other ISP it will be different:-

Ive have tried many things today and followed the port forwarding link provided putting in 3389 in start and end port and using TCP.

i haven't got win 11 pro on the laptop i am connecting from but I have got it on the laptop im connecting to and both are remote desktop enable. I have used the IP adress and the computer name on many attempts but it seems to get stuck when it ask for the microsoft (gmail) accounts's password. I know this is correct as i have signed in using it get it asks me to sign in again.

I am wondering now if i put the connecting from or the connecting to address in the port forwarding set up proceedure? sorry my brain has stopped working now but would appeciate answers using my simple language

thanks for quick replies

Can you log in locally on that machine using that account?

Does that account have local administration rights on the machine.

Nearly there! I managed to get the win 11 pro laptop to connect with the windows 10 pro but unfortunately I want the windows 10 pro to connect with the 11 pro laptop with the specific program on Thanks so much for the steps. in previous post! Although I did have to download remote desktop assistant to get the user name right. I did discover that the 11 pro laptop did have one more character in the password. I think i tried too many times to think straight. I'm still doing something wrong with the 10 pro laptop to the 11 pro connection but I'm sure now i have the correct user name and I did use both passwords. Did i use an administrator account? I dont remember! If you knw where i'm going wrong please shout but other wise watch this space !

i'm not there yet but i have a few more clues, I have downloaded the remote connection app on my phone but it still says username or password incorrect when i put the Computer Name or the IP address of my remote computer in. There is another option to use domain/user rather than the microsoft account but im not sure what its asking for sky\clarke perhaps?

I have tried to set up port forwarding with the remote's comuters IP adress as per steps 5 and 17 but i realise now that may have not been correct. As in Port forwarding with Sky Broadband

I have logged into my microsoft account on the remote computer successfully and it is an admin account. I do not understand why RDC programme and app will not connect to it when i enter the same details. Could it be that windows isnt activated with the product key?
