Hi,

I'm a happy user with Sky Q and the Sat service. Everything is working fine. I realized that Sky has phased out the Sky Q box and may also end the contract with Astra when it ends in 2029.

I'm looking at the Sky Scream puck, but I'm not sure if I would get more benefit than I do now with Sat and the Sky Q box. Perhaps better handling of additional apps and a central home for streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, and so on.

Could you please enlighten me?

The main 'benefit' is that Q is restricted to one point of UHD output and two HD screens while Stream with the Whole Home subscription supplement offers up to six in UHD (assuming sufficient internet bandwidth is arriving at the address)

Welcome to the forum

With sky stream you can not record programmes like on the sky q box all your recording will be lost, apart from any sky store purchases you need a good strong stable Internet connection aswell, there are no plus one channels and channels like talking pictures are not available on stream you can save programmes to your playlist and make playlists for other family members to also bear in mind if you change from sky q to sky stream that the first month of sky stream you will have two bills to pay out, your last sky q bill and your first sky stream bill sky stream puck or sky glass tv are self setup to just plug in and follow the on screen instructions

But it is imperative that you make sure you have a fast and stable enough home broadband network available in every room you wish to have a Sky Stream puck.
Sky Stream is very much a self service product with no engineer support. You must be willing to troubleshoot your home broadband network in order to achieve a reliable Sky Stream service. It is often not a simple plug and play experience as the Sky advertising would suggest.
Sky Stream can work well for a great many people but it can be a right pain for a great many others.

@Fafa24

As a Sky Q user myself, the main differences I see (beyond recording v. playlists), are as follows:

Less "live" channels on streaming compared to satellite. Not an issue for me, but if you must watch "Talking Pictures" or "Takbeer TV" you need to factor in that there are channels which are not available

Sky Stream live channels are HD as standard (which is why plenty of SD channels are missing)

The HD picture quality is better on Stream than Sky Q due to newer hardware and higher bitrates

Higher picture quality via apps than Sky Q as Stream handles Dolby Vision as well as UHD HDR

Better handling of "users" on Sky Stream with profiles for every household member available

If you take Multiroom/screen, you get the same picture quality in every room (unlike a Sky Q Mini that maxes out at 1080p HD)

Can be taken on a 30 day rolling contract instead of a 24 month one

Sky OS continues to develop with new features and bug fixes added regularly - Sky Q is still looked after, but not to the same degree (because of the aging hardware to be fair)

Those are the key ones for me. It is true that as a WiFi dependent product, the quality of your home setup is important, as is your broadband speed.

Is it any worse than managing Sky Q when the weather is bad or you are trying to re-connect a Sky Q Mini yet again? I don't know. Some people report a very frustrating experience (which you will see a lot of here as it is a support/help community after all), others only have minor problems.

Some people reportedly have "no problems whatsoever", but I doubt that, no system or hardware is perfect! 😂

Thanks for your input. This was exactly the kind I was looking for.

My broadband internet is fast, and I have also wired the rooms with Ethernet. I'm an IT guy working in that field.

It's not an easy decision, since I cannot really go back to Sky Q or satellite service. I need a thought to help me decide. My satellite reception is decent since I upgraded my satellite dish three years ago.

I love Sky Sports with UHD. I see the advantage of Sky Scream is to have UHD service for each Sky Stream puck.

Based on that, I think you should be fine @Fafa24 , you can use ethernet and turn off the WiFi on the pucks.

If your TV has a Freesat tuner you could also get the LNB changed on your dish and plug that in as a back up, or even buy a Freesat PVR (Manhattan do a new one called an S4-R), if you want at least some ability to record a limited number of channels.

Stream is several years old now so the infrastructure and OS has improved greatly. I suspect that is where I will end up when my Sky Q contract ends at the end of the year.

I could get NOW to access Sky Sports and use my Apple TV, but the experience on Sky Stream and "Real Time" availability to avoid broadcast delay, is more important to me.

(see https://helpforum.sky.com/t5/What-s-On/Changes-to-the-TV-Guide-June-2026/m-p/5285639#M168364 )

There were also some downsides, such as restrictions on functionality - eg "watch from start", live rewind, etc. Not sure of the details but my takeway was that what you gained for live sport, you massively lost out on with everything else.

@Fafa24 wrote:

Thanks - I read about "Real-time". Is it really good, and does it work for all Sky Sports channels?

Until now, I have had the idea that the SAT reception is about the best in terms of "Real-time".

The World Cup steams for BBC and ITV linear channels, lasted just during the duration of the World Cup on BBC 1/2 and ITV 1/4

The Sky Sports Main Event UHD/HD channels have offered 'real time' for several years and are still active showing it.

So all that is shown on those channels is available in real-time, not any other Sky Sports channel.

It was previously called 'live sync'.
It is available on the Sky Sports Main Event channels as an on screen button that links to the two Real Time UHD/HD channels on 921/923. You can just go to those two 921/923 channels if you wish, see them in the end and tv guide and add them to your favourite channels.

It works very well from when I have used it, without issues.

There were some when it first started several years back that had some slight issues with it, but not seen anymof that recently on here.

I watched just about every World Cup match using 'real time' on my Sky Stream pucks and had no issues.

Only watched for testing purposes.

Do not really care or see much point of this real time sync for my constant Sky Sports and other sports watching, if I'm honest.

Not quite real time would be a more accurate name.

If latency is your priority then Q would still be the better option.

It's amazing what happens in the 20 - 30 seconds between the goal going in and you actually seeing it!

Needless to say it is a lot better than the 90 second delay you tend to get with apps like NOW, and it will keep getting better, whilst other delivery methods (aerial/satellite) are gradually closed down.

If you want the absolute shortest delay and UHD HDR today, then Sky Q is just ahead still.

If you want the highest bitrate UHD HDR live sport delivery from Sky Sports, then "Real Time" via the SoIP (Sky over IP platforms - Stream and Glass), is only a few seconds behind now and it will get faster.

@Fafa24 wrote:

since I cannot really go back to Sky Q or satellite service. I need a thought to help me decide. My satellite reception is decent since I upgraded my satellite dish three years ago.

Not sure why you mean by 'cannot really go back'
As already mentioned, you can return to Sky Q within 31 days of trying Sky Stream.

You will not be asked to return your Sky Q equipment until after that 31 days has expired.

You will only need to return your Sky Q boxes, not the cables and dish.

As above, you can still connect the Sat dish to a TV freesat or Sat PVR. I have my old Sky Q dish connected to my TV, in that I use it more for fun (can't be bothered to take down the dish 😀).

From the network you mention, you should have a good reliable experience with Sky Stream and be able to easily understand the positioning of the pucks and connections for such.

From what I saw during those World Cup feeds along with what others noticed and some reports we saw.

I never actually really tested it in all real world tests as do not have Sky Q.

A freeview tuner, depending on the TV is around 8 seconds behind live.

IPlayer in hd/uhd is around 25 seconds behind freeview as is most other live TV broadcast apps, like ITV and HBO TNT Sports.

Sky Stream/Glass are about 18 seconds behind freeview.

Sky Stream real time is about 15 seconds ahead of normal Sky Stream so around a handful of seconds slower than freeview.

Sky Stream real time it seems is only a couple of seconds slower than Sky Q.

A freeview tuner via its coax is fairly consistent.

But of course broadband speeds and ISP delivery networks can vary, so could be a few seconds or so either way.

Is there a Sky Scream app, or is Sky Go included with a Sky Scream subscription?

If there are two football games at the same time, I watch one on the iPad.

Couple of minor points

- stream / glass Ethernet is limited to 100mbs. WiFi is not. Theoretically 100mbs should

be more than enough. I run mine through a wifi mesh system and have had zero connectivity issues (although have suffered some failed pucks)

- there is the odd thread posted where the stream devices don't play nicely with network switches ........
