BBC iPlayer in UHD

I am a bit confused about getting iPlayer to show programs being broadcast in UHD.

It all seems to stem around the settings on iPlayer. I was previously advised to change the Beta settings from On to Off and that sorted it. However today when wanting to watch Wimbledon no UHD options. So changed the Beta settings back to On and the UHD option appeared. So which is it please, is it supposed to be On or Off.

You do not need to turn beta on anymore.

That was a test a few years back for uhd testing.

If it's Wimbledon in UHD that you we're looking for, BBC was late switching the Center court matches will on today, so it was not available for anyone at times earlier today.

Yep, I think the bug is back. Which ever option you choose will fix temporarily and then the UHD option disappears again. This was a fault I had previously that started working again but now the bug appears to be back. I think it's one of those problems that not everyone suffers with @Stephen+Mourton

@lettice If that was the case they must have turned it off by accident because I was watching the centre court match with Alcaras in UHD then had to go out for an hour or so but when I came back the same match was on but no UHD to be found until I turned Beta from on to off.

That's what happens @Stephen+Mourton it reverts back to HD mode. Switching the beta mode on or off is just a temporary fix.

@Dazzasky This looks very much like a Stream problem rather than a BBC iPlayer problem, as I have been watching on my TV's iPlayer app and UHD appears every time (my settings remain on Beta Off) for Wimbledon centre court matches, but on Stream I have to continually switch back and forward from Beta On or Off for UHD to show.

I agree with you. It did seem to resolve itself a while ago but is back now.

Do remember the similar issue a while back and I could replicate it.

Last fixed back in mid May I recall.

Not seeing the issue now though.

Is it the same as before, UHD in iPlayer drops off after the Stream puck being off for a while?

Form me last week or so.

The Wimbledon UHD match on screen offering on the live channel to launch iPlayer in UHD or going straight to the app has worked fine first few days of last week choosing UHD for the Wimbledon match and has also been fine last couple of days I have been using it.

I remember that last time it took a fix from BBC iPlayer team to fix.

My iPlayer version is 38.35.9.0. build time of 4th July.

BBC do as we saw before regularly update their apps across the platforms.

See you have mentioned in the Superusers closed forum area as occurring again.

Will also, watch and do some testing.

Yes this is still happening. I did message the BBC but they basically gave me a generic reply advising I try deleting the app and installing again even though I stated it was on Sky Stream.

@GD1 Yes that is exactly my problem. I have been watching Wimbledon for a weeks now and every time I want to watch Centre Court in UHD I have to switch Beta on and then next time off, it is infuriating.
As I said it works fine on iPlayer on my actual tv app so can't be a BBC problem, it must be connected with Sky.

Yes, we found that back in May that going in and out of beta mode does some kind of cache reset of iPlayer.

Beta mode does nothing now though, so not really necessary to be switched on (apart from a cache type reset), as of late it has been the same version as production.

Odd, I'm not seeing the issue this time.

iPlayer had another update to 38.35.17.0 yesterday afternoon. Like I said above, it often has updates across their platforms.

The Smart TV app iPlayer app code is shared across platforms, so it may have an issue on one platform, but not another.

This is still happening with newer UHD programming, eg Parenthood and King & Conqueror. I've turned the Beta setting off and now have UHD content again

Don't worry @nmbailey it will soon disappear again. I thought it had been fixed yesterday because it gave me access to UHD content but it soon disappeared today.

I'm having the issue on my new Streaming puck.

I've tried flipping between Beta & non Beta mode.

2021 model according to the iPlayer Sys Info page.

Version 39.40.1.0, Build 26 Sept 2025.

The Screen & Layout res both say 1920x1080.

The Sky box settings are set to 4k dsiplay and UHD preferred.

I can stream Sky content and YouTube in 4K.

It's been like this for a while now however not everyone is affected @DaveRalph I just use the Iplayer on on my tv to watch UHD content.

This Bug is back, I couldn't access UHD content in the BBC I player app when I turned my TV on last night and again had to revert to switching the beta mode on then off to make the UHD content available, the same thing has happened when I switched the puck on today. This bug went unfixed for months last year and then around January/ February strted to function properly again. There seems to be an issue of when the puck goes into standby mode and then the TV is turned on again it won't show UHD content.

No doubt the latest update has broken it again, guess it's going to be another 6 months before they get round to fixing it or acknowledging that it's an issue.

Really getting fed up now.

This is the same for me, I have no UHD content showing on BBC Iplayer. It's so frustrating @386
