Netflix says my puck is gettig 1mbps but my laptop next to it is getting 76mbps. Is this a dodgy puck? I've turned it on and off and reset everything... but just seems to keep dropping out.

If you have dual band router, most are, the puck and laptop may be connecting to different bands and the puck has a weaker signal and/or interference.

If you don't have a mesh WiFi setup, try splitting the SSIDs in the router menu and then connect the puck to the one with the best signal.
