Sky Puck keeps asking for Wifi connection on start up / turn on even though I have disabled Wifi and have ethernet connected

Power save is turned off and restarted device many times, the settings are saved but it still keeps asking for WiFi??

I have even assigned the IP in the router to the device so it's not like the Sky Puck is waiting for DHCP to assign an IP

I Just want to be able to watch TV without having to refresh the home screen until it decides to use ethernet

Change your puck/s to the following recommended settings, set in Settings>

Set Network standby mode to ON and Overnight power saving to OFF.

Turn wifi OFF under Network if connected via ethernet.

It is important that when you make this change (or do any settings change toggle on/off, off/on) you immediately do a settings restart, as this will ensure the option is set correctly going forwards.

Go to Settings>Systems Management>Resets & Updates
Select Restart device
Your Sky Stream puck will perform a reboot. It will take a few minutes to complete

Turning network standby mode to on, does nothing useful, it would have been for wake on lan, but they have recently blocked this.

Also turning off the WiFi switch doesnt stay permenant, as soon as your puck detects no internet it will flip it back on.

What's your network setup like?

What's your isp?

Do you know how to change DNS setting on your router?

From past experiebce, DNS has been the cause of similar issues, using cloud flare or Google may help

Hi,

EE Full Fibre 500mb

DNS is pointing to 8.8.8.8 primary 8.8.4.4 secondary

It's not a connection issue, it's an issue with the Sky Puck, Aftera minute or two it connects to ethernet and is completely fine until i switch it off and then it asks for Wifi on next startup
It's like it doesn't know it's connected to ethernet until it picks up the IP

You are using the Google DNS.

Any particular reason why?

Thats ok, but it's often only seen as a temporary measure when an ISP DNS maybe having problems.

A UK ISP will always be better as it uses a better CDN a delivery path for supplying, especially when it comes to more specific UK streaming services.

Not sure, why your ethernet is dropping out and not holding its setting, as I mentioned above. This has solved the issue for many who have this problem and is the Sky recommended optimal setting.

Is your ethernet connection running straight from your Sky Stream or through an unmanaged ethernet switch.

We have seen a few rare case problems, that a Sky Q, Sky Stream/Glass box/tv can cause some handshake issues and drop off, with using some ethernet switches.

Is the ethernet only dropping off on an overnight standby, or does it sometimes do it after hours of not using during the day?

If the latter, would suggest a call to Sky to get your Sky Stream replaced.

The issue to me is the Puck falls back to Wifi if it doesnt sense an ethernet connection, This is proven by the fact Wifi is disabled but everytime on start up it asks for Wifi connection.

The simple fix would be a patch update

Wifi Disabled = True

          Use ethernet
Else

          Use ethernet

Thanks for your detail.

Yes, Google DNS and others like Cloudfare DNS can offer a faster dns lookup in some cases and as Google themselves generally hold a lot of quick fire resolution information that can sometimes get addressed faster. That though overtime does not make your speed day to day any faster.

But, if your happy with it, it's ok to use it.

I generally use Sky DNS, as providing support on here for the high majority on here that use Sky ISP dns and for those on other UK ISPs, that use a similar orientated ISP DNS.

I've been very happy with the Sky DNS performace in the coming up to 20 years of using Sky broadband in its many copper and now fibre forms.

But, also as I said above UK ISPs do have a more refined CDN delivery supply path for specific UK supplied streaming services.

A router, especially with devices connected via ethernet, will in the router logs, provide a timeline of the ethernet connections.

This may show when exactly your ethernet is dropping off in overnight or long term standby. Might be worth a look.

The options in settings are there exactly for this scenario, to switch off wifi when using ethernet, like I say, you do have to immediately make a settings restart to set the option, otherwise it may not get set.
A toggle on and off of the settings a few times may help and reset it, but once again done with a settings restart.

When I first got my two pucks, I ran them on ethernet for a few weeks. Mainly for customer help scenarios going forwards.

Since then I have run my two pucks successfully for a good 17 months+ on wifi only without any connection issues or dropouts apart from a few days now and again of testing an ethernet connection for queries alerted on here

I used the ethernet connection in my inital use directly and through an unmanaged switch.

I have updated the firmware on one of my my unmanaged switches, as I often use it for testing across many devices.

I noticed straight away from the logs the I capture from it, that without the option set, the ethernet connection to the puck, resolves to wifi at times during the day, but always did it briefly at startup from standby (after a good many hours) or overnight.

I noticed that just turning wifi off and not doing the settings restart, it failed to set that option on a pick up from standby.

On making the wifi and overnight setting changes, it resolved that problem immediately. Which is why I and others that have noticed and fixed many customers on here in the past, suggest it.

No idea, why Sky have designed it this way, but they must have their reasons.

No further patch that I am aware form Sky is really required, as it's working fine for the majority.

If we saw many customers on here with the same problem, after trying the recommended options changes not fixing, then we may flag to Sky.

As for a replacement, that is your choice.

Im having the same issue. Perhaps you havent got loads of people commeting is that it takes time and effort. This is a certainty an issue with the sky box and there are many various forums discussing a similar issue when you change your ISP away from Sky. The box keeps defaulting to WiFi.

Hi...did you ever get this sorted?

I've literally just posted a thread asking the same question.

the problem is that the puck connects to the router but not Internet. It's gets an ip automatically but isn't showing as connected devices on the router.

I've added the puck MAC and setup a static DHCP so it gives an ip out of the dhcp pool.

This connects the puck to the router and internet however I've come down this morning with the same problem with it not connecting to the internet. Change the IP in router dhcp setting to one down, reset the puck and works again.

Same issue here, over the last few weeks when turning on I get the no Wifi message even though Wifi is turned off and connected by ethernet. I've done everything mentioned on here in settings but it makes no difference.

I tried unplugging the ethernet cable and connected by Wifi, for about 3 days it's been pretty stable but I started to get a message saying there's a technical fault when watching live TV, only a reboot fixes it.

It's very frustrating as my puck as been pretty solid for the first couple of months.
