Does that work ok? if so, your projector might be having difficulties handling one or more of the HDR formats (Sky use HLG for all of their content, Netflix use Dolby Vision and HDR10.)

If HDR does prove to be the problem, does your projector have the ability to update its firmware, either via a network connection or a USB drive?

I'm not at home right at this moment to check the exact options/settings on my own Sky Stream puck. In the meanwhile, give the following a try....

From sky,com > help > articles > setting up ultra HD

Press Home on your Sky remote.

Go to the bottom and select Settings.

Select Picture and sound, then highlight Picture format.

Choose 2160p (UHD).

Select 10-bit so you can watch in HDR too. Not sure if your TV supports 10-bit? Select Find it for me. It if can it will select 10-bit, if not it'll select 8-bit and you won't be able to watch in HDR.

It'll say 'Do you want to save the changes?'. Select Confirm.

Didn't see the 'Do you want to save the changes?' message? Wait for the main screen to return, select Continue and try 8-bit. You should see the message this time. Select Confirm.

Looking at the PDF manual for your projector at https://www.documents.philips.com/assets/20240607/9d5e971531874b9ab652b1880029a48a.pdf

On page 26 there is a section on updating your projector's firmware online. Assuming you have your projector on your home WiFi, it might be worth checking if there is an update available. On regular TVs, such firmware updates often have fixes for HDMI device handshaking for mutually supported formats.

Otherwise the maxmum supported resolution for HDMI input looks to be 1080x1920 (page 27) and doesn't look to support HDR. It might be worth manually setting your Sky Puck's picture output to 1080x1920 HD, rather than one of the UHD resolutions & formats.

Projector is brand new so I'm a bit reluctant to update firmware etc and might just take it back to the store

it is not connected to home WIFI as I didn't think I needed to with the HDMI connection to the Sky Puck (hope that's not the issue!)

WiFi connection is only needed for either an online firmware update or to stream media from a home NAS drive, mirror a smartphone or similar. WiFi is not needed for to use an HDMI connected device though.

If a manufacturer make firmware updates user updatable & provides instructions via their user manuals, they're generally quite safe to do. I entirely understand your reluctance to try though if (and it s a big if) anything should go wrong.
