Soundbar unresponsive when stream is connected

Hi all,

looking for some help or even just an explanation to stop me going insane.

I have a Yamaha sr-b20a soundbar connected to a Samsung UE43TU7100k tv via hdmi 2 eARC port. This setup has worked perfectly for over a year, soundbar turns on and is operated by the tv remote.

I had sky stream installed, connected to hdmi 1, and afterwards noticed the soundbar wasn't working.

Initial problem was the soundbar had been unplugged by the installer. When I reconnected the soundbar (into hdmi 2 eARC) I couldn't get sound out of the soundbar despite checking/adjusting the tv's/streams sound output and pass through setting.

Strangely I get a prompt from the tv saying my that my audio output isn't connected to a port that supports eARC even though it is. If I unplug the stream from the tv at this point, the tv and soundbar work together happily as before.

Now, if I plug stream back in the tv has a second, but then all works fine, up until the system is powered off.
When powered back on I get the same message about the wrong hdmi port and no sound.

I'm assuming the installer couldn't get it to work either, which is why he HELPFULLY unplugged it and ran away!

it's like the tv gets confused as soon as the stream is connected.

My soundbar is currently rendered useless so would really like a solution to this issue.

How much did you pay an installer to connect a Puck to your TV?

Have you requested a refund or a revisit to properly complete the service provided?

Pucks are easy to self install🤔

@FathandsF47 Your Yamaha sr-b20a soundbar doesn't look to support Dolby Digital Plus, which is the default sound format that Sky Puck outputs when set to Auto (the default setting).

on your Sky Stream puck, go into Settings > Picture and sound > Sound > Digital audio output HDMI and change the sound format from Auto to Dolby Digital (not Dolby Digital Plus).

This should allow your soundbar to receive an audio format it can understand and to play sound ok.

there does seem to be an issue with the puck and eARC.

in my case if I go:

TV <------> AVR/HT <------ Sky stream

eARC gets jammed and I get no sound from the TV's built in apps or anything from the TV's HDMI1,2, and 4 ports (port3 is eARC), if i turn of HDMI control it does then work but! I have to then manually put TV to HDMI3, manually put AVR to port1 and then manually turn on the puck.

if I plug puck into HDMI4 on the TV (I have to as only HDMI3 and 4 support dolby vision) like this:

Sky stream------> TV <------> AVR/HT

then everything lives in harmony, even with HDMI Control ON and it will boot TV up to HDMI4, which in turn wakes up the AVR/HT.

yes, tried everything from HDMI format to puck sound modes etc.

@BCX9 HDMI control is great in theory but you can hit issues as you have discovered. In practice each manufacturer tends to set up HDMI-CEC differently often giving it different names heaven forfend they want you to but their own kit instead of working properly with a competitors. I have hit similar issues in the past and I used a workround of turning off HDMI control and instead used a Harmony programmable remote but given Logitech have discontinued those and mine is getting old I also now connect my puck via the TV which also means the Sky remote controls all 3 units.

Quite which part of the chain is the issue is unclear but given their is a workable configuration I would stick with that.

Agreed, and it's fine, I can live with that.

As you say it's hit and miss.

Still overall Puck works well for me
