Connecting Starlink to Sky Stream

Hello,

Has anyone connected Sky Stream to Starlink, if so, please indicate how you did it, what extra devices you had to order etc

A Stream puck shouldn't care that the internet connection is arriving from LEO satellite as long as the router which Starlink provides behaves like any other ISP hardware on the client side. No additional hardware should be necessary.

@roboftheblues As per @TimmyBGood You should be able to connect the puck either ethernet or over wifi to the supplied Skylink router/hub. Nothing else will be needed.

You just need to make sure that the IP address you're allocated by Starlink is a UK one..

The issue with starlink is high latency. This can be problematic for stream. I have seen stream connected to star link and it's performance was inconsistent. I am quite sure that sky themselves do not recommend sky stream or glass with starlink.

The Gen 3 router has 2 ethernet ports, what makes you think it doesn't?

Not according to their website. The standard service has low latency. The non standard service isnt prioritised so may be subject to latency issues

@GD1 depends on which package you buy. The standard non-motorised model has the gen 3 router, the standard motorised does not and the router supplied has no ethernet ports

I get a median of 32ms and lows of 20ms based on what my StarLink app says and stream UHD content from the normal providers, Amazon, Disney+, Netflix, etc.

I'd observe Starlink themselves say

Latency ranges between 25 and 60 ms on land, and 100+ ms in certain remote locations (e.g. Oceans, Islands, Antarctica, Alaska, Northern Canada, etc.). These speeds make Starlink suitable for streaming, video calls, online gaming, and other typical household internet use.

I have starlink and it does not work with stream. Pulling my hair out (what's left at least) trying to resolve. Sky state that its not compatible but starlink says it is

any help appreciated

I did some more research and the problem seems to be related to that SkyStream casts the whole of what you see from their servers. So when you press a button on your remote, the box sends the signal back to the server, which processes it and then you see the channel change, pause or move around the screen to select something.

Whilst StarLink is fine for normal streaming/video calls ect, the round trip time lag of the person doing something and see it on their TV is too great. This either results in too many presses of a button or action, which looks like it isn't working.

Hence SkyStream isn't compatible with StarLink.

I know someone who lives is the West Country and have a poor broadband speed of just 10Mbps, with Openreach still today have no current paths of faster broadband or fibre.
What they have been using is Starlink
In summer of 2021 they connected their Sky Q to Starlink and had no connection problems for the two and a half years they had it.
At that time they were getting a reliable speed of 150-170 Mbps download and 25-35 mbps upload.
Their latency around 20ms, occasionally up to 30ms.

More recently, still using Starlink they are now getting a slightly increased speed of 190-210 Mbps
Their latency is 20-25ms, but occasionally hits 30ms.
That is using one of the dish and routers from their orignal purchase in 2021, so they reckon (not that they feel they need to) if they upgraded to one of the latest routers and/or dish or mini dish setups, they might even get another increase in signal.

Back in June, they decide to move to Sky Stream, having three pucks.

They told me that they have had no connection problems at all with any of their Sky pucks, that are all on wifi.

They make the point the Starlink router pushes out a good wifi signal across their five bedroom property on two levels with one puck on the first level and two pucks on second level.

The supplied Starlink router only has one auxiliary ethernet port, but with a switch works fine to supply a few devices on ethernet, for their kids gaming kit and their electric car charger pod.

They recently had an altnet lay a new service down their road providing a 1GB+ service/

They told me they are so happy woth Starlink reliability that they do not feel its worth the move to the service.
