Sky stream against Sky Q

I have a Q box but contract coming to an end . Can I still record and download programmes with Stream .

Not in the same way, because Stream pucks do not have hardware drives.

Seems to be many issues with stream if this site is anything to go by . Never had any problems with Q .

Everything is streamed, so you can access content providing it is available on a catch-up/on-demand app that is either free or you subscribe to.

Some content Sky does record to their servers but that depends on the programme/sport/film and if they have the legal agreement in place to take the cloud recording. Even cloud recordings may be available for a limited period of time. I've seen some sporting events where Sky only have the rights to keep a cloud recording for 48 hours after the broadcast has ended.

Typically the issues tend to stem from people who have unstable WiFi networks and who don't typically understand why WiFi networks may have interference and why that may not affect smart phones and tablets but would the Sky streaming platform.

Also worth pointing out that as this forum is typically for people suffering issues you will always see more negative comments for a service than positive on here.

Both Q & Stream can work well but Stream requires more input from the customer.
Sky Q is easier to keep stable, particularly just with one Q box. If the box works, the dish is pointed in the right direction & the cabling is solid then it'll work well.
Sky Stream requires a constant fast and stable broadband connection, a connection which will vary in every household depending on ISP, speed received, WiFi interference, bandwidth, number of users, etc. It requires more care to be taken on the part of the customer to ensure the broadband network is sufficient & stable enough to allow the product to function effectively.

Presumably you weren't using Q at launch in early 2016.

From about the seventh firmware revision it got to be reasonably stable...

Like it or not Streaming is the future and Q will be consigned to history.

Stream is not perfect but it will be here to stay, Glass on the other hand I suspect will eventually quietly slip away.

If switching Q to stream you really need to do your homework to judge if it is the right product for you. I was an early adopter of stream and visited Sky stores asked lots of questions here but at the end of the day it wasn't for me and I returned it.

I'm sure it is more stable now but there are so many other streaming options out there too.

As per the advice above, one of the most important factors is re good bandwidth within your household.

As mentioned also, do your homework, search on here for some customer 'moves to Stream', from the likes of Sky Q

Have a good read also of the Sky help articles and videos on here for Sky Stream, basically the setup/using and FAQ ones;

I have SkyQ at the moment and it is linked to the Sky Soundbox rather than via the generally poorer tv audio. Can the Soundbox still be linked up to Stream? Thanks.

@Stephen+Mourton Some aspects of Soundbox functionality, sound modes, are linked to Sky Q ... they will not be available😟

Whilst you will not be able to access the Sky Q specific sound modes via HDMI, you can connect the Soundbox to the TV optical out and use it that way.

You should check out the Q section of the forum. It is also full of reports of problems. That is basically what these forums are for. Personally, I have had Sky Stream since October 2022 and I have had no problems that weren't easily resolved.

There is no perfect TV service.

We're British. We like to complain about everything.

People moan about Sky Q, people moan about Sky Stream and Glass. People moan about Virgin Media. People moan about EE TV. People moan about Freeview. People moan about Freely. People moan about Freesat. It's what we do.

The only way to know if a TV service will work for you is to try it. There are so many options out there now in many different price brackets. You don't even need to stay with Sky any more to get Sky TV. You can stream Sky channels live and on demand using the NOW app in UHD/HDR and Dolby Atmos on various devices which is perfect if you only want Sky Sports or only want Sky Cinema.

Sky are becoming much more flexible in how they offer their service which is great for everyone.
