If I pause a program after about 5 mins stream switches off and I lose the program

@pjohng Unfortunately it is the way the system is designed and I believe it is to do with the EU energy saving legislation. Some time ago when I was moaning about a similar issue @TimmyBGood posted the following link (HERE) by way of explanation.

The way I get around the problem (when I remember) is to note the position of the programme on the progress bar and then wind it back a little and leave it running. When I get back to the TV I can then FF or RW to the desired position. The drawer back to this is the poor implementation of the FF & RW function.

@pjohng Does it happen on all programmes on all channels... or does the timeout period dependent on programme and channel?

Only 5 mins wouldn't be the result of any legislation🤔

@Exiled-in-HH For me it does it when pausing any live TV but not watching anything on demand. I have never timed it but 5 minutes or so as suggested by @pjohng would be about right. Prior to having a Stream puck I had Glass and that did it as well but after about 10 minutes. The difference was it just un-paused and jumped to the live transmission rather than shut down.

I have never considered this a fault but as annoyance. If it is important enough I just go to watch from start and FF to the appropriate position.

Sounds more like a guard against excessive server disk space wastage if it is only 5 mins🤔

i haven't seen a device with a energy saving timeout of less than 2 hrs😉

@Exiled-in-HH That could well be the answer but as you say it's a little excessive. My TV can be set for 2hrs minimum.

100% this is the reason! They should have just put some storage in the puck, could have put 50gb nvme for next to no money!

Hi Fothergill11 If I try to go to restart any program I am watching it also switches off I cannot go to watch from start on any program.

@pjohng When the puck shuts down after being on pause just restart it. If you then go to the programme you originally paused do you not get the "watch from start" option when you press the button in the middle of the ring (ie the select button)? If so you should be able to restart the programme from the beginning and then FF to the spot where you paused it. Most programmes should have this option.

Obviously this won't work if the broadcast has finished.

If I restart the puck after it has switched of it just goes to the normal sky start screen. So there is no way to go back to the start of the program. If I then return to the program it is mid way through and if I press the start from the beginning it just switches of and eventually back to the sky start screen.

@pjohng That doesn't sound as though the puck is behaving properly. I would be inclined to call sky for their advice or if you prefer I could escalate you post to the Community Messaging Team and they will send you an invitation to an online. Lem me know if you would like the escalation.

@pjohng Apologies I have only just seen your reply. Before I escalate something has come to mind.

Does the Watch from Start not work all the time or only after it had shut down following a pause. If it is all the time try a reboot of the puck (switch off at the plug for a minute and then plug it back in). After this have another look to see if the watch from start function has returned.

Hi Sorry about this but .I realised I had a second puck for my upstairs tv. I tried this on my main tv and it seems fine. So I will just contact sky and ask them about a replacement. Thanks for all your assistance.

I'm finding this so annoying, it means you can't answer a phone call for fear of losing what you're watching or going to sort dinner out. I can't believe that the law states only a few minutes! It used to be 30 minutes on sky Q and yes, to someone else who asked, it does still happen even if it's not live TV. It would be okay if it picked up the show you were watching straight away but you have to go from main screen again every

time. It's the most annoying thing about sky puck!

Hi @H181 You will be pleased to know that Sky have listened to their customers and are currently rolling out the UI 3.79.0 update that extends the pause time to 25 minutes and when it un-pauses it just continues playing the programme (this allows you to rewind if necessary).

The update is rolling out in batches as usual so hopefully you will get updated soon.

I've been reading a lot of posts on this forum with reagrad to all the annoying features of the Sky stream puck, lets face it, it's probably the worst streaming device available, the menu system is appaling, it wants to shut down if your watching an app like BBC iPlayer, FF/REW is clunky/jumpy, picture and sound contantly "glitch" sometimes just sound, sometimes just picture and sometimes both (I have 2 pucks on different TV's and they both do it), this happens on any program or app. Power off or reset doesn't fix anything. It beggars belief that a tiny Firestick out perfoms this piece of junk, worst decision moving from Sky Q to Sky Stream (oh and by the way, I'm on a 1Gbs network with very low latency)
