topic activating a sim in Sky Mobile

So the TLDR is that my phone fell out of my pocket last week. My first phone losee in the 4 years I've had one. I never had a phone prior, never needed one until my mum died and suddenly I was pushed by all my siblings to get one as I live on my own.

I bought a new phone, and it took a lot of work with sky (online help wanted to call me, but I didn't have my phone, ironically calling them wanted to send me email verification - but a visit to my brothers let me borrow his phone and leech his wifi covering both bases finally, of course I had all my account info on me as well) The big issue was that I needed to amend my address as I was forced to downsize my living accomodation. So once that was done, I explained about the phone and how I needed a new sim, which they sent.

The sim arrived today, but I can't activate it as once again pesky verifcation, this time wanting to send a code to my phone... whch I obviously can't do as I don't have have it. Why the technician didn't disable the security checks last week when I explained the predicament I don't know. I'm going to a sky dealership in the city centre after work tomorrow, I don't understand how it's such a complicated process (why do I need verfication code via sms when I have my sky account and my email verification.) Are other networks this bothersome to manage? I'm honestly tempted to swap after one bad experience after another.

Is this sim a new one or a replacement and can you not activate it by using the code that came with it ?

It's a replacement as I lost my phone, a new one seems like it would need a new account? Whenever I try it keeps prompting me for a (my existing) phone number to send a security code to.
