I was with BT for a number of years, so used the Youview box. The recording issues I had were continually missing the end of programmes because there was no padding available to increase the cut off time. The BBC were pretty good as they always seemed to use "accurate record" correctly, which meant you got the full programme even if there was a delay in the schedule. In the end though I just used on demand for most of my viewing so coming to Stream was no problem at all.

Glass Air & Stream - general experience after 2 months

Following on from my earlier post about the initial glitches with my Glass Air TV, and Stream puck, I just wanted to make some comments now I've used it for a little longer, something of a mini review.

Probably the biggest issue has been the Wi-Fi 'No Internet' fault. I initially had both the Glass TV and Stream puck connected by Ethernet. The puck upstairs was connected via an old BT Powerplug adapter (manages about 200Mbps). It was occasionally stuttering a little, so I disconnected the Ethernet and switched to Wi-Fi, which has improved that.

The Glass TV though, continued to show the no Wi-Fi error even with it switched off, and being on Ethernet. I tried a new cable, and resetting the router, and the Glass TV, but to no avail. Last week I disconnected the Ethernet and switched over to a Wi-Fi only connection. Being right next to the router, it shouldn't have any connection problems there. So far so good with that. After a week or so, I haven't seen the morning Wi-Fi disconnected error.

Looks like the issue with that is with the Ethernet side of it. I'm guessing Sky are assuming most people will just use Wi-Fi, so maybe skimped on the Ethernet port setup.

My Samsung S60T sound bar still occasionally does a disconnect and reconnect (usually within a few seconds). It's not a serious issue, but I guess it just doesn't like this particular soundbar. I tried PCM only, but that puts lip sync out a little, and passthrough made no difference. A different cable didn't help either. I can live with it for now, it might go days before it happens, very occasionally it might happen twice in one day.

I notice from other posts that Advert skipping can be problematic. I feel this is more down to the individual channel apps though, as each one behaves differently.

ITV is hit and miss, sometimes I can do a quick skip, sometimes I have to fast forward and hit play at the right spot - that's usually indicated by the programme showing and extra half hour of playtime.

Channel 5 is terrible, usually it does a quick skip, but more often it'll freeze on programme play. I have to do a reverse, pause, play shuffle to get it going again, then it stutters a few times before resuming normally.

Channel 4 is much better, and usually does work fine with a quick skip, sometimes it even jumps the adverts completely all on its own.

Sky channels are not too bad, the skip button seems to show up and work OK mostly. Occasionally it'll still show part of an advert, or even the last full advert sometimes, before resuming playback.

None are perfect though, whether you use it while the programme is still live, or wait until it's on catch-up, they all have some kind of glitch. Being on the ball with the remote can help a bit.

Episode linking can often be hit and miss too. Sometimes replaying the previous episode. I usually now just go down to the list and pick it manually. Also seems to be down to different channel apps, as each behaves differently.

All of this happens on both the TV and the puck, so it's not device related.

Just recently we've also seen that subtitles glitch I've seen discussions on. It was certainly a surprise to see them, but using the three dot button on/ff trick works, and it's only happened two or three times so far.

Overall though, we're reasonably happy with the choice to get Sky Stream. It's a different experience to traditional TV, and recording stuff, but we're adapting and getting used to it.

The Glass Air TV is good enough, and probably can't be beat on value (we got the 43" for just over £4/mth). We've left most of the settings at auto, and that's does seem to work well. In hindsight though, I probably wouldn't have bothered buying the TV, and got two pucks instead. The puck offers a better experience - it has less glitches.

I still have the Apple TV boxes attached, which IMHO, still give a much smoother overall experience, although linking with the channel apps is also not always perfect. Both systems often pick up the wrong next episode for example. But we're forced to use the Sky system mostly, in order to use the advert skipping - despite its glitches.

It was still much easier with the old YouView recorder box, which was pretty seamless in recording next episodes, and advert skipping just worked. It was crude of course, having to manually fast forward, but it did just work. However, I doubt we'll go back now, the pros do outweigh the cons, just about 😉.

cheers.

Nice review.

When using Ethernet, you do need to turn wifi off in settings, not sure if you tried that. Otherwise it can drop to wifi as hoc sometimes.

Still, it looks like you have a good wifi connection, so stick with that.

I do not really have issues across the apps with Ad skipping.
But, what can be a slight learning curve, is the different ways each apps implemements it, like for ITVX, keeping the button down to skip the ads, whereas C4 app, is more a few clicks.

One thing also, sometimes is to let the start trailer on the launch play out for a second and then envoke ad skipping.

Yeah, at the moment I'm not going to try and fix something that's not broken (well, maybe a little dented!)

Indeed, it is very much a matter of learning how each channel works - although I feel it should be more consistent. Perhaps Sky should employ a UI guidelines for the third party providers to adhere to.

I have noticed that it helps to wait a few seconds as the advert trailer starts. I often find it helps to even wait for the programme sponsor bit to finish too.

Nevertheless, it's a system that certainly needs more work in it.

I think we were fortunate that issue didn't happen too often. It was mostly to record on the channels with adverts, so we could skip them. We did use BBC iPlayer most for streaming stuff that clashed, but would stream one if the others if we really had to - it is just getting too much having to subscribe to all of them just to miss adverts.

That's certainly one of the main features that drove us to give Sky Stream a go. It's a sensible fee to be able to skip advert breaks on multiple channels . Even with the glitches, it's very well worth having. Indeed, we only had the initial Stream puck a day or so before we ordered the Glass TV and Whole Home, and upgraded to Ultimate.

Despite the odd glitches, it's good value which suits our needs (but only with all the offers that became available once we'd initially signed up).

Cheers.
