You can certainly purchase a newer model if you have a gen1 Glass TV. The gen2 Glass TV has several improvements over the gen1. You simply need to purchase it either online via the Sky website or by calling Sky.

You can't upgrade your existing Glass TV though - it belongs to you from when you start paying for it (if you bought on finance) and you must finish paying it off regardless of whether you buy a newer model or not.

@angelacarpenter There is no upgrade/update route with Sky Glass, you would need to purchase the New TV, add to your account, make it the primary device then remove the old set, also reset it and simply sell it on.

Sky Glass is no different to any other TV in the sense that if you want a to replace a Samsung, LG or Sony TV et al, you are free to buy a new one. What you do with the old TV is up to the customer.

Sky, Samsung, LG, Sony et al are not going to take your old TV or use it for a part exchange.

Then don't buy another Glass TV.
Sky won't take back your existing one and swap it for a newer one. You agreed to buy the original one when you ordered and started paying for it. You need to pay it off whatever you decide to do.

I'm with you on this one Angela, was looking to upgrade also and had thought that Sky would have some recycling option particularly as the Gen 2 is more expensive, so they benefit

Nope: they'd be left with worthless electronic scrap which is expensive to dispose of.

There was actually supposed to be a 'Swap' scheme for Glass (it was even announced at launch in October 2021) but the economics and logistics just didn't make business sense: it's not really the same as posting back a mobile phone.

As with other manufacturers Sky is obliged to have a 'recycling' route, but for Glass sets they do so by contributing to a general industry fund which subsidizes waste reception centres and associated reclamation businesses rather than receiving individual televisions back: this is typical for large appliances with high shipping costs.

In theory sets can also be returned to a physical Sky shop, where I'm sure the staff are always delighted to receive them ; )

I don't believe there was ever an official announcement that Sky would recycle or part exchange original Glass TVs to later models.... although some forum suggested that this was a possibility.

There is nothing stopping any customers from selling their Glass TV or taking it to a local recycling centre or gifting it to family or friends. So long as the loan is cleared Sky don't care.

Sky Glass is unique in having the operating system and the sound bar built into the TV. Beyond this, Glass is just like any other TV brand/ manufacturer who bring out new models every year but don't offer part exchange for upgrades. This maybe a feature for some mobile phones and contracts but not for TVs

So Sky has not been the first manufacturer to offer upgrades on its TVs.

So maybe those who purchased the original Sky Glass on the basis of being able to upgrade can make lawyers richer by having them take a case of misselling or false advertising or whatever 😜

Possibly a tenuous argument for exiting a minimum contract term on a Gen 1 set, although outside the launch event the 'Swap' option was never mentioned in any contract terms or Sky advertising which I'm aware of (which may have perhaps a clue it wasn't going to happen)

They weren't the first though. Samsung introduced a TV upgrade program in 2018, allowing customers to update to a newer model of Samsung TV after two years. If I remember correctly it was for those who purchased a TV on a (similar to Glass) long term finance agreement.

The Covid pandemic soon put a major spanner in the works and the entire program was abandoned, as per this still active web page:

One suspects that they perhaps realised, much like Sky have, that such a scheme is a lot more hassle than it's worth.
