Yes there is no hard drive in a Sky Glass TV or a Sky Stream puck so there is nothing to record to.

In part the ad skipping is out of Skys hand as for content watch on demand by ITV, Channel 4 or Channel 5 they are in charge of putting their own ads into their catch up service and if want to skip ads within Channel 4 app for instance you normally have to subscribe separately to that and another sub to ITV X for their premium tier. The only thing Sky can control in theory is the ads they put in their own on-demand content, so the ad skipping can actually be seen as a bit more convenient if you tend to utilise content from these multiple on-demand services.

Streaming is ultimately where TV broadcasting is going and with advertising revenue decreasing the broadcasters are looking to make up for the fall in ad revenue by charging you to skip or remove ads. Just look at the more premium tiers of Netflix and Disney plus now and how much they cost just to remove the ads from one subscription service.

don't forget the ad-skipping add-on is an optional extra so if you don't think it's worth the £5/month don't pay for it and instead watch the ads.

Elf was playing on normal TV last night. I recorded it for my daughter. When I have gone on my playlist to watch it, it is telling me I can't watch it because I haven't bought the movie elf? Has anyone else had this problem?
since I bought the sky Glass. I've noticed some perks that you had through the normal skybox you are having to pay for now, for example, i used to be able to fast forward and record for free, now I have to pay £5 a month to do this, and now it's not letting me record movies that are on normal TV channels?

@Anonymous Firstly you didn't "record it" as Glass cannot record anything.

2nd The playlist will select the available On demand service for playlisted items, in this case you're being directed to service where you need to buy the film.

If the sky box that you pay the same for each month, offers you the facility to record films that are on normal TV, the sky Glass should offer you the same service. You are then, basically paying for less of a service. And then paying extra for things you get free on the sky box.

@Anonymous Sky glass doesn't record in the conventional way as it doesn't have local hard disk space you therefore add programs a playlist which players it back from the on demand service the program/film belongs to , in the case of elf it belongs to sky cinema and therefore you require a sky cinema subscription to play back

sky showcase (which is included in the base sky package and is not free) is just that a showcase of all available sky content (with sky hoping it encourages people to subscribe to the appropriate service ) and needs to be either watched live or not at all

Sky Q and Sky + is completely different from the sky streaming platform which is a streaming platform. In this situation Elf was on Sky Showcase, and is no a few more times over Xmas. Sky Showcase programmes are a showcase of programmes from other Sky channels so if you don't want to watch live you need to have access to Sky Cinema or purchase the film via Sky Store in order to watch it.

The streaming platform has always been different and Sky have always marketed it differently than Sky Q

@Anonymous Sky were competing against video recorders so implemented a similar system which carried forward from Sky+ to Sky Q.

After starting with such a system made it difficult to change without excessive squealing from customers.

FTA channels need advertising on their content, and streaming allowed them to introduce unavoidable advertising on their content. The fast forward charge compensates for ad avoidance. A better solution would be a reduction in number of unavoidable ads... 3 ads max in breaks after the can now be made unavoidable on streaming🤔

It's a wholly different system not least because it has no internal recording service and doesn't rely on a satellite dish. It's absolutely vital to research carefully before you switch, so that you know in advance what you're buying.

Streaming services are the future, however, as the orbiting satellites are expected to be decommissioned probably before the end of the decade.
