Thanks for the reply, but I have tried another confirmed working hd ( as I mentioned in my post ) same result. I am wondering if the hd controller has gone bad or (long shot) the SATA cable is faulty?

Hi,

So overnight my admittedly old Amstrad 500gb(DRX890) Sky+HD box has decided to stop working., It no longer recognizes that there is a hard drive installed. At first I just assumed that due to the age of box the disk had failed, but after following a tutorial online I was able to change the drive for one I know works. This however did not fix the the problem, still no drive,! The box says it is in "Diskless mode" . I realise I'm probably scewed (as I know Sky won't let me pair my card with a reconditioned box) and will need to move to a new Sky setup. But as my mother has dementia and any change causes her upset. I thought I would just ask on here incase anyone has a solution ii could try, I know it's a long shot. But thanks in advance to anyone who takes time to answer.

Thanks,

Andrew.

If the drive has failed then you could source another one and attempt a transplant (or pay someone else to try it) : there are still resources online describing such things.
