I live in a block of flats supplied by a communal dish. 2 stories high, 9 apartments in total. One of my neighbours has Sky Q the others have Sky+. Sadly my box is on its last legs and the second hand market for these isn't great.

I'd like to move to Sky Q even if it's only for 3/4 years until satellite dies and I'll assess the market again then - hopefully Sky follows EE with their TV Pro box which allows recording of internet-delivered tv by then.

I understand the LNB type used for Sky+ is different to Sky Q which allows for more simultaneous recordings to take place. At present I have two dish outputs from the communal system which allows for dual recordings on Sky+ but not compatible with wideband system required for Q.

I understand a device can be installed which allows Sky Q to work with this type of system and allows for a communal system to be made to work (dSCR I think it's called?).

My questions for Sky therefore are:

what is the cost for installation if any in a communal setup?

do you or I obtain permission via property factor for access?

if my Sky+ equipment eventually does fail and you aren't able to provide Sky Q, what happens to my remaining contract to 2027? Does this end early as service can no longer be provided?

That's because a replacement Sky+ box will no longer work. Your viewing card will only work in the same Sky+ or Sky+ HD box it was linked to in October 2024.

Sky typically won't charge, but your building owner may well do so.

do you or I obtain permission via property factor for access?

That's subject to individual negotiation.

@MojoGlw wrote:

I understand the LNB type used for Sky+ is different to Sky Q which allows for more simultaneous recordings to take place. At present I have two dish outputs from the communal system which allows for dual recordings on Sky+ but not compatible with wideband system required for Q. (yes but the LNB output is slightly different for Communal Systems - communal system LNBs themselves have 4 separate feeds, one for each polarity & high/low band so that the system can service multiple requests on any of these)

I understand a device can be installed which allows Sky Q to work with this type of system and allows for a communal system to be made to work (dSCR I think it's called?). Yes an adapter can be fitted to allow the dSCR requests from the box to be provided from the 4 feeds from the Communal system/LNB mentioned above)

My questions for Sky therefore are:

what is the cost for installation if any in a communal setup?

You will need to contact SKY sales for this - it can be free but may depend on other offers

do you or I obtain permission via property factor for access?

Yes permission must be allowed for the engineers to add the adapter

if my Sky+ equipment eventually does fail and you aren't able to provide Sky Q, what happens to my remaining contract to 2027? Does this end early as service can no longer be provided?

I am not sure on this - SKY may be flexible now that they don't support replacement boxes

I am guessing you have already read this but in case you haven't - You may, also, wish to read some notes I have made for people considering switching from SKY +/HD to SKY Q

SKY +/HD to SKY Q

Any further questions, we will try to help
