TNT Sports motion blur

For a few weeks now I've noticed that motion blur is occurring on TNT Sports channels.

I've had these channels for years from the BT Sport days but the issue has only started fairly recently.

The worst sport for this is snooker, with the balls, especially reds, blurring as they are hit. But I've noticed it on other sports too, especially when there are bright oranges and reds moving fast.

Other channels like Sky Sports and BBC/ITV dont show any such problem, so I know it's not my tv or Sky box.

Has anyone else suffered this, it's really annoying me now.

I've also noticed a sharp drop in picture quality on TNT Sports HD channels since the start of the football season. Quite a lot of digital artefacts, like blurring around the edge of player's shirts, some really odd effects if the camera is pointing at floodlights, where there is a kind of halo effect. The picture quality on TNT Sports used to be excellent, probably better than Sky Sports. I guess they are using new picture software designed to save some bandwidth, but at a significant cost to picture quality.

I keep thinking "is this a cynical strategy to force people to get UHD?". I watched one of the recent England games on ITV and the picture quality was outstanding. Why can't all HD broadcasts be like that?

The current snooker tournament is on ITV4 and there's no issues at all, perfect picture with no motion blur.

Maybe I should cancel TNT Sport in protest at their **bleep** service ?

I've just seen clips of the Wales v New Zealand game on the BBC 1 News (from TNT Sports who had it live).

And there it was, motion blur on the red shirts of Wales.

I'm so glad the UK Championship Snooker isnt on TNT next week.

@KevNewMedia Can this be investigated please? Sky customers are paying a premium for TNT Sports, and there has been a very noticeable deterioration in picture quality on all their channels since the start of this season. As has been pointed out on this thread, there is a blurring/shimmering effect that is particularly noticeable on red coloured shirts, especially in close ups. When shirts have stripes, a shimmering effect is also apparent. Overall, the picture quality is barely HD, looking like either a low bit rate or some sort of encoding issue. TNT Sports (and before it, BT Sports) used to be the benchmark for picture quality, so something has changed. Whether it's at the broadcast end or further down the chain doesn't matter to the customer, as Sky customers are being left with picture quality that is sub standard. Would be really grateful if this could be looked into ASAP.

@KevNewMedia The problem on TNT Sports has not been resolved. There are still odd things happening to live sports events where they are the host broadcaster. An example is today's live coverage of the FA Cup game between Gateshead and Walsall on TNT Sports 1. On close ups and panning shots, the stripes of the Walsall shirts appear to shimmer or blur. At the edges of the screen, the image is noticeably blurred/out of focus/lacking definition. If they review the footage, it is obvious that there is a problem. I am guessing that it is an issue with the software being used to compress the picture. The same issue was evident during the coverage of a Crystal Palace match last week. Although interestingly, the same match was fine on the version that was available to download as a catch up. Can this please be followed up with TNT.

The Snooker Shoot-out Tournament currently on TNT is truly awful.

I've had to watch a stream from Discovery+ onto my tv which while not great quality at least has no blurring when the red balls are moving.

@KevNewMedia There is still something odd going on with live HD broadcasts on TNT Sports 1. A very noticeable shimmering effect whenever someone wearing red or orange moves across the camera, particularly on close ups. Perhaps TNT aren't bothered about a few complaints, but it's a very odd artefact to see after many years when their live coverage was of reference quality.

@KevNewMedia The issue was very obvious during the TNT Sports 1 coverage of the Leeds v Manchester United game today. Shimmering effect on nearly all close up shots of the Man U players in their (red) shirts. If they review their live feed of the game, it will be obvious that there is an issue with the HD coverage, at least on the Sky HD platform.

This has been going on for far too long and it's unacceptable. Football games are almost unwatchable when players are wearing red jerseys. Worse still, Sky should immediately look into the issue in terms of risk to people with epilepsy. A friend of the family with the condition had to leave the room during a recent Man U game because the flickering affect of the motion blur made them feel unwell!! Sort it out!

I agree. @Terbium reporting it,yourself to TNT with a demand that they 'sort it out' would at least add some customer weight to the complaint.

I think it might be a good idea to keep things civil on this thread. I'm glad others are noticing this issue on the TNT Sports channels on the Sky HD platform. I was beginning to wonder if it was my system that was the problem, but clearly not! The shimmering effect on the Man U v Brighton game was obvious and very distracting, and I can well imagine how distressing it might be to others. For the record, I used the online form to report this directly to BT/TNT on two occasions, but received no reply, probably because I am not a customer of theirs. So the only option was to report it on this forum. However, although @KevNewMedia acknowledged my original post at the end of November, and stated it would be taken up with TNT, no further information has been posted by him on this thread, despite it being an obvious and ongoing problem for Sky customers who have taken out the option of TNT Sports as part of their Sky contract, for which they pay a significant amount each month to Sky, not TNT.

Tonight's coverage of Liverpool v Barnsley on TNT Sports was marred yet again by a marked shimmering effect on the red Liverpool shirts. And the PQ looked lower resolution than HD. Players on the far side of the pitch were blurry and out of focus. What on earth is going on with TNT Sports channels on the Sky HD platform?

@KevNewMedia Any update on this please? Still a major problem with blurring/shimmering of red/orange shirts when moving across the screen, especially in close up. Particularly bad on last night's coverage of Tottenham Hotspur v Dortmund. Thanks.
