Just a bit of a moan really.

But as a customer who whenever I speak with anyone at Sky they wax lyrical about how loyal I am, but lives in a flat with a communual dish and a Freeholder unwilling to upgrade it for Sky Q.

I've spoken to Sky who's only options are - Sky Glass (which means buying a new TV) or Sky Stream. Both of which sees my monthly costs going up. Anyone else find this really poor from Sky?

I'm not clear why your monthly subscription would go up by switching to Sky Stream.

What prompted you to speak to Sky? You can continue with Sky+ for the foreseeable (or at least until the hard disk fails).

Ah ok. The reason is simply that Sky+ boxes aren't capable of receiving the Sky Sports+ streams. They're too old to accommodate the technology required.

Sky Stream/Glass is designed for streaming technology, as is Sky Q, Sky's current satellite TV platform which they appear not to have mentioned.

Yep, Sky Q is what I wanted But sadly I'm not allowed to have my own dish so my options are one of those 2.

I've been expecting Sky+ to go out of support for a while, but would have thought that Sky would have done more in terms of making sure we're not out of pocket, given the amount of flats built around the turn of the century with the communual dish that all fall between this crack. My options was Sky Q for no extra cost or pay more for one of these.

Many communal systems can be used with SKY Q, although it needs the communal system to be providing a good enough signal and the ability of SKY to install an 'adapter' usuallly in the cupboad that supports your sepcific feed (which needs your buidling management's permission to happen).

Have SKY or your buidling management ruled this out ?

Sadly yes. Freeholder says they won't spend anything on it "use streaming services instead". Sky said that if it was a newer version, from later 2000s onwards it could be done. Minimum requirement is for 2 lines coming into the property, the ones like I have here predate Sky+ even so it's single connection point. Which was bad enough having to choose to either record something or watch live tv. It's a shame they stopped their plan for the initial "dishless sky" which was planned to be full SkyQ over the internet.

Sorrry to read that but there seems to be some confusion regarding the 2 cables.

SKY Q does need 2 cables from dishes but unlike SKY HD uses digital signals and uses a Single cable from the 'adapter' (what is called SCR mode).

The adapter (just like actual distribution system for SKY HD in communal systems) needs 4 separate feeds from the LNB into ths distribution system - one for each polarisation & high / low bands

The 2 cables for SKY HD are used to be ble to record a different channel using 'Universal' type voltage & 22KHz to select which band.

I suspect the acquisition of Sky Group by Comcast killed off any such plans. Q is fundamentally hampered by having only the main box capable of UHD, which was reasonable in 2016 but rather less so in 2024.
