The problem i have now is recording,what it is i have a sky hd box,what i was doing before was watching a sky had channel ,and recording another programe of a standard channel,before they were closed down,so ive now had to record of an hd channel,which takes up alot of space on my hd box ,no good phoning sky,because they will say well you could have had a q box, also i cant watch sky go now on my desktop computer that keeps going dark.

@sweetheart4321 The only option is to start clearing space on your Sky+HD drive as they are not intended as a archiving system but to timeshift programs to be watched leter. If the box failed you'd simply lose all the recordings in any case.

I'm not sure what you want the forum to do about the lack of drive space as you're using an old legacy unsupported system.

It's the extra data that,gives the additional detail in an HD picture. It's inevitable, therefore that an HD recording will consume more disk space than an SD recording. It's not a fault, and there's nothing you or Sky can do about it, I'm afraid.

All you can do is regularly watch recordings and avoid using the hard disk as an archive so that you keep the available space to a reasonable level

yes i know theres nothing i can do about it,thats why i dont like changes ,before they shut those standard channels down,i could record so much more from them.

I recently put up a post saying i can no longer record so much now on my sky plus hd box,because what i was doing before was watching s sky hd channel and recording of a sky standard channel,but because theyve shut down the standard channels,i have to record of an hd channel,which takes up so much more space on my box,the only way round this is in the future,if i get a q box,i understand that you get alot more hours recording space on them,but ive also read up on these q boxes,and what i can read up about them,is that they can be a bit complicted to use,sky has been trying to get me to have one,saying there wont be no extra charge,but i always think theres a catch to it.

@sweetheart4321 I've added your post to your previous thread, as there's no need for a new one.

I believe there are conditions to the 'free' upgrade offer - you have to have a second 'Mini' box and a Whole Home (Multiscreen) subscription, but you can, of course, confirm that with Sky. There's nothing hidden, but you do have to ask.

ok thanks mark,its a nuisance when theres changes, so il have to think about going over to sky q now,i cant record so much on this hd box now,but i wont rush into it,il take a couple of weeks to think about it yes i did read up ,i could get 180 hours recording time on standard channels,but only 60 hours of hd programes on my sky hd box,thats why when i was waching an hd channel i was rtecording something else on standard channels,and all the standard films and sports channels are only in hd now,,and it was alot of sports i was mainly recording.

Here are the notes I have made for people considering switching from SKY +/HD to SKY Q

you should also not that depending on your existing SKY HD box you may not get any more disc space on SKY Q

As others have said the recording facility is really aimed at time shifting rather than archiving (although I know I hang on to some recordings for a long time)

As I say it depends on which SKY HD box you have - IIRC they can have 1TB which is the same size as the default SKy Q box..

SKY Q boxes are available with 2TB but thesr are fewer of these around & will almost certainly incurr an upgrade cost

P.S. It may not affect you but as mentioned in my notes if you have multiroom then on SKY Q all recordings are stored on the one main box and not on separate boxes that SKY HD does

The default Sky Q UHD/HDR box since autumn 2019 has a 1TB hard drive so is half the capacity of late model Sky+ HD and earlier Sky Q main boxes.

You get used to a lot of things you use on a daily basis. The same applies to Sky boxes but I think you'd get used to a Sky Q box and I have not regretted upgrading to Sky Q in 2019. If you upgrade then any questions you have you can post them on the Q board.

Yes, it depends on the model. A basic Sky+HD box, model DRX890 has 500MB capacity. A DRX895 model can have 1TB as @nigea99 posted, or 2TB.

I have a 2TB version 1 Sky Q box. Installed November 2019 so probably one of the last ones before 1TB became the normal issue. The specs say it should be enough storage for 'up to' 350 hours of HD content which comprises of 1.7TB for personal storage and about 300GB reserved for use by Sky. At the moment I'm using about 22% of the available space which is about the usual except over Christmas or if we've been away.
