topic Phone line is faulty in Talk

When the landline rings, and we pick up, there is a noise not dissimilar to a fax, but not quite the same.

If we hang up, the phone rings again and same issue. This can happen several times in a row. The call is from a different number each time, so I don't think it is a call centre issue.

Broadband is working fine.

Can anyone suggest a solution please?

Yes: activate the free Sky Talk Shield. It has an optional call screening feature which requires the caller to state who they are before the call is referred to you to either accept or decline. The likelihood is that whoever (I suspect it's whatever rather than whoever) won'tbe able to say who they are, and consequently you'll never be bothered by them.

This doesn't sound like a line fault.
