Only 1 BT socket in property currently used for router.

If we bought a doubler and put it directly into the BT wall socket could we use the other connection for an answer phone?

Welcome to the forum @GeriatricLady .

If your phone socket has a single port, your router (Hub) should be connected to the port via a microfilter as shown in tab 3 here.

https://www.sky.com/help/home/broadband/sky-broadband-equipment/sky-hub/setting-up-my-sky-hub/articles/set-up-hub-broadband-hub-standard

The microfilter has one port for your router, and the other for connecting phone equipment including an answerphone. You wouldn't need a doubler.

You can buy a microfilter from most hardware stores, or online - they're not expensive.
