The methodology used to select random numbers is unlikely to have changed in the few days between me changing suppliers and numbers. So why has the number of scam calls risen dramatically

Before moving to Sky I had an unlisted Virgin broadband phone line and rarely received a scam call. Since moving to Sky Broadband phone line a few months ago I receive at least weekly scam calls. My number was supposed to be unlisted. Can anything be done We are both elderly and have mobility problems. It is very inconvient and concerning

The unfortunate reality is that whether or not your number is unlisted (I assume you asked Sky for it not to be in the Phonebook etc) you can still receive spam calls.

You might wish to have a look at the free Sky Talk Shield which can help protect against them. I use the BT equivalent which is very effective.

Unfortunately being unlisted doesn't make a difference. The scammers dial multiple numbers automatically on the off chance someone answers a call. The number its dialled from can be spoofed so it isn't necessarily a correct number. Either get a phone with a Call Blocker feature or research Sky Talk Shield.

Can't say. Perhaps Virgin having their own telephone/broadband infrastructure has something to do with it. All the other mainstream providers like Sky use the Openreach infrastructure.
