Who advised you to do this?

Was it an email? Did it contain a link?

(it may be a phishing attempt if so)

If you have received an email out of the blue with a link in it to change you password then that isn't from Sky as it is an attempt by someone to get hold of your personal data by installing rogue software so mark the email as spam so it gets deleted and never click on the link within it.

Sky has something like twelve million television and six million broadband customers: any data breach reported to the ICO by a company operating on this kind of scale would rapidly become national news.

As indicated above, any such email (or text) is likely to be an attempt to steal your current password, particularly if it's inviting you to click a link to do so.

Yes, sadly it's a common approach. The irony being is that the account isn't compromised but the recipicent is lead to believe it is and then actually does compromise it by supplying the fraudster with the details they require...
