As with all digital reception the difference between a marginal signal, with perfect picture, and an unusable signal is very small. A failing LNB (the bit on the arm of the dish), especially if it's more than 5 years old, might be the cause. You've proved it's not a box problem, so an issue of some sort at the dish or the cabling is the problem.

Hi,

Earlier today, ITV signal gltched a little, but settled itself and the program continued as normal.

Fast forward to this evening, and I have the 'no satalite signal' message.
So I checked the signal strength. 2 is fine but 1, shows no signal, null.

I have tried:

1) Unplugging the power from the box for around 5 minutes. No change, same message.

2) Swapping the cables at the back of the box. No change. Signal 2, still fine. Signal 1, no signal, null.

I live in a bungalow with no close neighbours. No storms or strong winds recently. And when we have had them it hasn't altered the dish alignment.

Most likely problem?
Thanks for any advice.

Could be a faulty tuner in the sky box, best get someone out to take a look at your setup

Sky or a 3rd party aerial company will be able to help. You can contact Sky using the number here (See the "Need more help?" dropdown near the bottom of the page)

Note: Make sure you have the correct country flag selected in the bottom-right of the page

Thanks. I'll see if I can borrow an old box from someone,. See if I can rule that out.

I'm don't have Sky Tv as a service anymore, so i'm trying to avoid a call-out fee if possible. No idea what the cost is for one of those.

Tried a friends Sky HD+ Box and the result was the same. So that rules the box out.

Strangely enough though, this morning, all the channles were working again. Signal strength was back up. ITV was a little glitchy but BBC & 4 were fine.

But come early evening, and the signal has dropped back to zero. And the 'no satalite signal' message has returned. No probelms with channels like Dave though.

Seems odd that I can get a signal during the morning and afternoon. 😕

Thanks for the reply.

It's hard to imagine that the dish has become misaligned, with the weather being as still as it is. And it has weathered some pretty heavy gales in the past.

So, would this the behaviour of failing cables / LNB as you've mentioned then?
I would have thought a failing piece of equipment would fail no matter the time of day?

I could replace the LNB, (as i've done it before). Though this one is a little tricker to reach...

Things don't often have a black and white failure point, some things can fail at a particular temperature or another piece of electronics might kick in at a certain time of day causing interference issues, it is hard to accurately diagnose a failure remotely

Thanks again. Just to be clear, I wasn't doubting the diagnosis. 🙂

I'm just curious about the cause. And the only thing I can think of is that's it's something failing due to the temperature change. Nothing new electrical here, so that rules interference out (we have no near neighbours).

I'll see what happens tomorrow.

Thank goodness for iPlayer etc.

For anyone with the same problem. My issue turned out to be the LNB. I replaced (with one from Amazon, at little cost) and all was well. 🙂
