Recordings stop before it’s end

Every night I record Newsnight on BBC2, for the last week, when I watch the playback, I find the recording has stopped about 5 mins before the end, meaning I miss the discussions.

What is the padding setting on your Sky Box you can add an additional 5mins to your recordings using this

Thank you for your speedy response. I've looked through the pdf file, but it doesn't mention "padding settings, or am I missing something. Regards

Services >> Options >> Sky+ Setup

Add to start of recording

Add to End of recording

These are the options commonly known as padding

Thank you again for the speedy response. Found it, they were set to Auto, so I'll tweek the settings and see what happens tonight.

Thankyou for your response. I followed previous advice from the community, and altered the padding from Auto to 2 mins, but this made no difference, so I will await your EPG solution. Regards

I’ve added 5-10 mins each end and still hardly ever get a full programme!!

BBC are still looking into this. Meanwhile, you can set the recording by selecting Newsnight and the BBC Weather that is on after Newsnight on the Sky TV Guide and then choose "Record Series on both."

Newsnight is persistently and deliberately run late - and has been for around 20 years. The BBC's excuse is that it lets people watch their local news on BBC1 and then turn over and not miss the start of Newsnight.

However, the BBC should be sending the "start" signals when each programme starts, which the Sky box should be looking for. Ie, if there is no padding, it doesn't record 22:30-23:15, it records from "Start of Newsnight signal seen" to "Start of Newsnight's successor programme seen".

If you set "Add to End of Recording" to 10 minutes, which is the longest - there really ought to be 15, 20, 30 etc options too - then it will record until either 23:25, or "Start of Newsnight's successor programme seen"+ten minutes. Can't remember which.

Ultimately it's the BBC's fault for playing fast and loose with the times, but ALL UK broadcasters pull these stunts, in particular ITV and the BBC. Which is why PVR creators are FORCED to add these archaic "padding" options for recordings, which simply shouldn't be required in this day and age. Other than the odd live event overrunning, you wouldn't need padding options in 99% of cases. But here we are, needing to use this safety net for a flagship regular programme, which has entirely predictable and planned-to-the-second timings.

So because we're relying on a safety net, it's tempting to think "the safety net should better". See above for my suggestions on how to make it better. But the root of the problem is arrogant broadcasters doing it on purpose, day in, day out.

Using manual record will allow more flexibility to the amount of time you can add to a recording

Hi @mr.tickle,

Our platform management team has been in touch with BBC schedulers regarding this. The issue seems to be caused by the BBC Weather slot, which is scheduled as a separate programme for 5 minutes after Newsnight daily. This used to be a short forecast in between programmes and was therefore not listed in the EPG.

According to BBC, billing the weather separately after Newsnight was an editorial decision as for years it wasn’t even mentioned in the Newsnight synopsis. So viewers are now able to see that there is weather after Newsnight.

Following our reports, BBC schedulers have now made changes to the way the recording works, so that it shouldn't stop when BBC Weather kicks in.
