What channels are UHD and 4K

I'm thinking about investing in a 4k UHD OLED tv, do i have to subscribe to view channels that stream 4k or UHD, i only have the basic pakage the old Variety plus F1.

I did notice that while watching F1 an icon popped up and informed me that it's "avalible in UHD" does this mean i get it automaticaly.

Hi @dsotm58

If you have the F1 legacy pack I believe you would also need the early Q Multiscreen pack to get F1 in UltraHD.

Also bear in mind that if you do change your package it is possible that you may lose the F1 legacy pack

Yes i had to fight to keep my package and F1 Legacy, just loked at my options and i see it would cost me £4 to upgrade to UHD but would this only upgrade F1 or would there more programs avalible to me.

There are no 'UHD channels'. UHD content from Sky is typically individual premium live Sport events, some on-demand Cinema films and some Box Set (download) content (assorted Drama and Documentaries), so you require one or more of the subscriptions to cover those in addition to the UHD supplement.

Hi @dsotm58

No channel is UHD as such as UtraHD content is sent by separate transponders.

However you would need to subscribe to the Channels where any UHD content is broadcast by the UHD transponders..

Sports - Sky Atlantic - Sky One etc

@dsotm58I would avise that you be careful regarding any upgrade that it doesn't force you down the Sky Signature route.

I don't think there is any possibility of the Legacy F1 channel being included with Sky Signature (I don't believe the system allows that combo).

I upgraded from my old package a couple of years ago to Sky Entertainment and then they said they couldn't keep the Legacy F1 with it & Entertainment has now been superceded by Signature - As it happens I was happy to change over to full Sports as overall it actually cost me less to re-contract

BTW Whilst I watch the F1 in UHD IMO it is not significantly different. I generally don't feel 4k (non HDR) is a big improvement over good quality HD - the big difference for me is the DOLBY ATMOS sound on some UHD programs (Such as Discovery of WItches & several films - but I have a full Atmos capable surround system with separate speakers)

@jezza353No live standard broadcast channels are in UHD.

Some cinema and some box sets are and are labeled as such the percentage is increasing.

No idea about sports I don't watch it.

Thanks @bob1234 I am fortunate to have all packages you mentioned above and just got a UHD telly! Was just putting a feeler out seeing if it's worth €12 a month? HD is €8 so it appears it's only €4 more a month for UHD.

FYI for anyone with a UHD Telly! If you subscribe to Netflix or Amazon Prime, if you access it through your smart telly and not through the sky q box if you have the non UHD ready q box. You can view UHD content on those streaming services if accessing them through your telly and not accessing them via the q box as long as you have a UHD telly

Also to mention I have sky 500GB internet service that is directly feed to my house only and not shared with any surrounding sky customers

@jezza353Unless sport is streamed the internet speed does not matter too much as everything else is downloaded to disc and then played from there.

If you have a very slow internet you would have to plan your downloads a bit but it will make no difference to the play back.

It depends much on your TV's size and viewing distance whether you will see much difference between UHD and upscaled HD.

I find the apps on my TV give better quality than the apps on the Q Box.

Thanks for the reply @bob1234 The sky fibre 500gb direct feed I have never goes lower than the pic above even at peak times so I've never seen a lag in the speed and that's with the son gaming On gaming computer and a ps5 at times. Two MacBooks being used all at the same time. And yes your correct going into the two apps I mentioned above I've only ever been able to get UHD content when going through the UHD telly not the sky q box as apparently the one I have is a C version and not a B version witch is UHD ready. My telly is 60"

@jezza353To check which box you have look at this link, if you have an early 1TB box it will not get UHD.

However all the 2TB ones do BUT again the V1 version will not display HDR. If you have one of these you can pay Sky for an upgrade.

@jezza353 internet speed is irrelevant for live broadcasts as Sky use the satellites to carry the signal. Sky lease 3 transponders for their UHD services and where there is a UHD version say for a F1 race or premier league game customers with UHD subs are offered the option to choose that by pressing the red button on the HD version or choosing it from the menus. All main 2TB Q boxes support UHD but only the newer ones support HDR but that is not currently used for sports broadcasts. Only the oldest 1TB boxes need to be changed for UHD.

All on demand material is sent to the disc before it will play so Internet speed is again pretty irrelevant as long as it is faster than the play out rate of between 15 to 20Mb/s the recording will be playable when the box decides it can start without buffering. The speed the download can use is capped by Sky to save server bandwidth so they are unlikely to go over 100Mb/s.

1. You need a UHD supported TV

2. You need the relevant packages: Sky Sports, and the Sky Ultra HD pack
3. You need to be upgraded to the Sky Signature pack from Sky Variety, however you will lose access to Sky Sports F1 without a Sky Sports subscription.

I have just bought a qled tv and already had the hd add on. I now have the uhd add on. Having read the posts, I now realise that there are no uhd channels as such. My question is, if something is available in uhd, will my tv automatically play it in uhd? Or does a notification always pop up telling you something is available in uhd? Thanks in advance.

If the channel has UHD it will prompt, i.e. Sports channels.

The majority of content is in downloads, e.g. Movies & Series, you have an option to set the download format. You can change this default to UHD.

Hi @PeterH100

No it doesn't play UHD by default - you have to take some action

The only current 'live' UHD is Sport.

I have found it can vary for these. Sometimes when I change to the channel & it is in UHD I get a message to press enter to go to the UHD or sometimes a prompt to press the red button which takes you to a menu from where you can select the UHD feed

At other times, generally, pressing the Red button is the route - although occasionally it doesn't work and you are also not always prompted so you may need to check

You may be able to go straight to the UHD live sport by finding a 'tile' in the various sections & by using voice search for say UHD Sport & then (when Live) selecting the Tile

For movies & other programmes the content is all downloaded - generally best to set your download default to UHD in :

Main Menu -> Settings -> Setup -> Preferences

You also should be able to select the UHD for the programmes by going to it in various places and then select the 'Other Formats' tab/option (e.g. from the TV Guide)

One quirk for F1 is that the UHD feed is live for the whole of the race day when the HD versions are split into chunks (Build up, Race, Post analysis etc) & the UHD Feed option (to record or select) is on the 'Race' HD programme although it starts when the Pre Race Build up starts (i.e. the programme before usually an 1h30 before)
