LGU

i was definitely told by Samsung some years ago that I should turn the television off at the wall over night rather than leave it on stand by.

I have just googled this, and most sites seem to advise to turn the television off at the wall over night.

I probably watch on average five hours of television in any twenty four hour oeriod.

I bought this television new, over seven years ago and the television is still working well. I hope I have not tempted fate by saying this.

Three quick questions.

I always turn my Samsung Smart TV off at the wall over night when I am not using it, rather than leave it on standby.

I turn it back on next day. I do not want to leave it on stand by all night.

1) I assume this will not harm the television.

2) One thing I have noticed. When the television was switched off at the wall.

I had forgotten I had set my Sky Q box to record a programme. The recording still went ahead, even though my television was turned off at the wall though of course my Sky Q box was on standby. Is this normal that I can still record a programme through my Sky Q box, even when my television is turned off at the wall

3) I have my Sky Q box set to Eco Mode and unlike my television, I never turn it off at the wall. I leave it on stand by mode when not in use. I assume that is ok.

Oh well. I think there is a difference of opinion on whether you should or should not turn your smart tv off at the wall over night

As I say, I have done this for over 7 years and no harm seems to have been done so far.

One final thing on this thread.

Samsung have advised me that as my smart tv is over seven years old I may not be getting any more software updates.

I assume if this happens I will still be able to watch my television and use catch up tv and record programmes via my Sky Q box in the normal way. The worst case scenario is that I may not be able to get certain apps etc. I assume even without software updates my television will still function, in the worst case scenario as an ordinary television and not as a smart television. Am I correct?

Switching television sets off at the wall is antiquated advice from early CRT times when they were frankly scary, unreliable and sometimes unsafe things: it just became embedded as a cultural relic. Repeated power cycling is counterproductive for modern electronic devices and may contribute to premature hardware failure.

Two popular scenes were inspired by the early years of television; firstly, the phrase "Don't forget to switch off your television set" (and on rare occasion, "Don't forget to switch off your television set, and unplug it from the socket"). The phrase was usually spoken over a completely blank screen (in Granada's case, it was a screen advertising independent radio stations), often after a moment of complete silence; or dead air, prior to the transmitter being switched off. It was used as a warning to not leave your television on, and to not leave it plugged in; doing so on early television sets ran the risk of the television overheating and subsequentially catching fire. The second scene involved the "little white dot", a phosphor trace which lingered on the screen as the power faded, slowly shrinking in size until eventually fading away completely.

The only advice I read in favor of turning off the TV is from sites trying to save money on electricity which was not good advice

I believe the regulated power draw for a television on standby is now something like 0.5W. On Radio 4 'More or Less' calculated a saving of something like 50 pence a year rather than the £20 to £30 erroneously stated in a 'money saving' item on a different programme.

You TV is too old to get some apps and some apps may be pulled. And some apps may not work properly. Your solution is to get a new TV (not Samsug, Hisense, or Vestel) or get an Amazon Firestick 4k Max. Yes you can use the apps that come with Sky Q, but the ones that come with a Firestick can give you a better picture with a 4k TV.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

The general advice is.

1) Do not turn your smart television off at the wall, which is contrary to the advice given by my manufacturers. As I say I have over night for many years been turning my smart television off at the wall and it seems not to be suffering any bad affects. Most of the sites I have visited advise turning smart televisions off at the wall over night so I will continue to do that I think.

2) The fact I am no longer getting software updates should not affect the functioning of my television other than I might not get all the apps, but I will still get the ones provided by my Sky Q box

3) My smart television is seven years old and the advice is to get a new one. Sadly my finances will not allow that at the moment. As I watch about five hours of television in any twenty four hour period, hopefully I have a few years left on my television.

Having said that it will probably go wrong today.

Thanks again everyone and I have now marked this thread as answered.

It won't, until it does: you'd never know if you could have got ten years out of it instead of eight. Smart televisions are absolutely designed to be left on at the mains
