Thanks @bob1234 I did split the frequencies, with the Sky Q box off. The BT HH dropped the connection while the Q box was powered off. It came back with 'wifi status: off', although (I'm struggling to remember the sequence here) I did get into the hub home page after the connection dropped when it had come on again and saw that 'wifi status' for 2.4ghz was on and 'wifi status' for 5ghz was off.

I'm back on the Plusnet router which just is as good on the wifi signal, but I had forgotten as I've been with Plusnet before, the router seems to reconnect more quickly and not lose connection as easily. Which can be a problem out here in the sticks. Also the Plusnet hub currently has the frequencies split and I've reconnected the Q box to the network, it is back to 'normal'. However the wifi can be poor so I was thinking of using a wifi plug extender to connect the Q box to via an ethernet cable. Would this help and do you know/can you suggest a compatible brand?

Thanks for your input.

Hi

I've just got a new BT HH6A router and yesterday all was well after setting it up until I connected my Sky Q box to the network.

After a restart the router no longer broadcast a wifi signal on either 2.4ghz or 5ghz channels. The wifi was on in the router settings but the wifi status was showing as 'off' on the routers home page.

I messed about with it for a while before giving up and reinstalling my old Plusnet router - including connecting up the Sky Q box.

This morning I thought I'd give the BT HH6 another go as it's a better signal strength and all round better than the Plusnet hub. It worked! Maybe just gremlins yesterday...but as soon as I connected the Sky Q box the router stopped broadcasting wifi. It was still connected to the internet when I checked with an ethernet cable.

I want to keep using the BT HH6 is there a way to connect the Sky Q box that won't cause the router to lose wifi? Not an ethernet cable the tv is too far from the router. Would 'home plugs' work?

That's not normal behaviour it all works for me. Have you switched off smart set up? Yes powerline works.

Thanks @SDR yeah I'd switched off smart setup. It seems it's not Sky Q box. The router has just switched off and when it came back up the wifi status was 'off' althought the wifi is on in settings. It maybe that the line speed is settling down (new sub to Plusnet) or that there's a glitch or two and the connection dropped, we live out in the sticks. Plus I'd turned off the Q box at the power so it couldn't be that. Can't get the wifi back on but can connect laptop via ethernet. 😞

Althought the BT HH6A was a new one, all shrink-wrapped, maybe it's got a fault? Have gone back to the Plusnet router which is poop... 😞

@AnonymousThe latest smarthub2 can give problems as it is dual band which uses the same SSID for both frequencies.

Try if only as an experiment turn off 5Ghz in the hub, you can do this even though you can't split the frequencies.

If it is only your Q box not being able to connect it could be trying to connect on 5Ghz which can't be done with routers supplied by anyone other than Sky, also you can't use WPS to connect to a non Sky router.
