UHD info

Hi everyone.

I'm planning to buy a new UHD tv soon. I'm wondering if I need to do anything except fixing the picture resolution on my sky Q box? And is it worth watching programs in UHD?

You also need a UHD subscription on top of the HD pack (if you don't already).

Most UHD is delivered by download, e.g. movies, series etc.

There are no dedicated UHD channels as such - but some do provide a feed at the relevant time, e.g. F1, Football etc.

TBH, HD is pretty good - UHD adds extra detail.

HDR is another question....?

hi @Germanner7 you will need the UHD add on to be able to access any UHD content (& must have a UHD capable box)

Other than that you need to make sure you set any settings in the TV - most will probably work with 4K (SDR ) out of the box but may need settings tweaked to use with HDR (terms like Deep colour/ Extended colour / Enhanced colour)

UHD content does vary in quality - some is not significantly better than good HD but other much more so & HDR content in particular is particularly noticable.

BTW to get HDR content you need to have an HDR capable SKY Q box (not all are my v1 2TB UHD box isn't)

If HDR sounds appealling as well as UHD, then make sure the TV you buy has the HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) version of HDR as Sky Q requires this. Most of them do these days but worthwhile checking.

Also, the size of screen you buy and how close you sit will affect how impactful the difference between HD & UHD is. Anything above 50" should start to show noticeable difference.

If you have very slow broadband then downloading UHD programmes could take a while as they are significantly larger in size than their HD counterparts.

Not really for sport. . It's nice to have uhd but if your tv is decent at upscsling especially then you will, in my experience, have to look pretty hard to see the added benefit of uhd on n the Q system.

hdr programmes are slightly better still but, again in my experience, you'll see better PQ on other platforms. Like Netflix through your tv app. (Not the sky q version )

edit to add

a further frustration with uhd on Q is the fact uhd programmes are not assigned to a channel. You ha e to go to a sports channel say, and then select uhd from there it's a bit like a red button option, but one in the uhd programme other functions are no like newt available. Like the search snd scan banner, so you can't browse while watch uhd. And if you leave uhd to browse then come bank to it you've lost your rewind facility obviously.

for something that was conceived to acomodate uhd, and why else given the existence of sky plus at the time, the integration of uhd in sky Q is frankly appalling.

I guess though if you want uhd for sport then Q is the only real option. But for movies look elsewhere. In any event though, expect some disappointment and..... well, you won't be disappointed 😆

Sky+ cannot host apps: Sky+ HD is now a 15 year old platform and had been around for a decade before Q was released.

please explain..,, why, when smart TVs outnumber sky q boxes, does sky q need all the same apps as the smart tv but isn't capable of delivering at least a comparable PQ standard as the tv apps?

Personally I don't use any of the apps on SKY Q and do generally recommend people to use their Smart TV's apps if they have them but we cannot assume that everyone has upgraded their TV to modern Smart TVs.

There will be a lot of customers who want to use the apps who do not have Smart TVs yet ( or indeed some apps are not available on all Smart Tvs - for example Disney + i s not available on mine)

@Not+better I think the point that @TimmyBGood was getting at is the Sky HD+ boxes cannot accomodate apps.

Everyone is entitled to there own opinions but i'm afraid I disagree with your as I much prefer Sky Q to the old technology of the HD+ boxes mainly as I can watch my recordings on any box there are other reasons as well but that is only in my opinion

Depends on your tv though doesn't it

if your tv isn't smart the apps might be more useful

petsonally I'd rather a decent tv be knowing what I know now. I'd stick with uhd from other sources. Unless you like sport. That though would be for the op rather than you or me. Well.... more you really 😀

maybe try snd stay on topic chaps rather than racking up points for the sky ambassador core
