The four people I know who all got Glass have now returned them.

Reasons varied from poor quality hardware, endless software glitches, unstable pucks with UHD content, random playlist quirks, and general reliability issues.

All of them were quite tech savvy people, used to streaming services, but they just felt Sky Glass just wasn't in the same league as other providers. A glossy UI and EPG with a vast array of content available does not automatically equate to a good viewing experience.

One of them has since bought a new LG OLED for only a hundred quid more than they paid for their Glass TV, and has said that using the apps on it are much faster and easier than Glass ever was.

Personally, I think Sky could have saved themselves a lot of bother (and money) by simply producing a decent NOW app for all platforms which streams content in UHD/HDR/Atmos and let the customer decide how they view it. Their own hardware & software just doesn't cut it these days.

I have now come to the end of my tether with the constant faults with this system, pucks having to restart every time you want to use them, the main tv and the pucks back to the beginning never working consistently, I wish I had not sent the old SKy Q back and would be wiring it back up right now. But to get it back will cost me the price of the sky minis again etc etc

For the monthly price.... It is currently extremely poor, has far too many caveats, and really unreliable.

I believe the hdr atmos subscription should be free. The skip adverts only works on sky's on demand programmes, so something I also won't be paying extra for when the time arises.

How much do you think the subscription should be, I am thinking more like £10/month at the current state, £14 for it with full hdr and atmos including Netflix.

I spend most of my viewing hours not even using Sky services.

The price structure has to be the same as Q really, otherwise Sky will lose money on Q customers cancelling.

I've had Glass for around two weeks. It's fine. As it's the only TV in the house I don't need pucks so don't have those issues.

They won't. NowTV is another Sky alternative.

Q is worth the monthly cost. With lots of things devolving to 3rd party streaming services including Discovery, your subscription pays for less and less content

Q you paid sky to watch what you recorded from sky broadcasts.

Glass you pay for what Sky can record and what they can't, you're relying on those 3rd parties for more and more content, yet sky get the most money and your bills keep going up.

It's interesting to read as hand on heart my Glass experience has been pretty solid. I got it on the 4th December and everything has worked. A few minor issues with the pucks showing black screen exiting YouTube, but I'd say no more than 4 restarts overall.

The only thing I can think it can be attributed to is environmental factors, I.e I think that sky has under estimated the requirements for WiFi as it's not just sync speed that is a factor. It does feel that sky should be able to issue more guidance on this, but guess it's hard given the the number of isps and versions of routers etc out there.

I've invested in my home network, ensuring uniform coverage, QOS, cherry picked bands, custom DNS settings etc. However this is because it's what I do for a living l, and totally understand this is way beyond what should be expected.

Hopefully things will get more stable with updates as the product matures.

MikeAlanR

@fizzdisco It's a strange one it's been the biggest mystery to me, others have explained and given their reasons and feelings on the mix but even now I cannot understand the reasoning behind a TV, I get it they want to try and lock in customers bla bla but the sad state of affairs is the world moved on sky didn't, there obsession with hardware like you say is ridiculous. Sky are rubbish at hardware they are a content provider and a good one at that if that stuck to content instead of make shift hardware they would be on to a winner.

If they insist on hardware it would of been better if they launched a box (not a crappy puck) but a full featured decent box, that had the same concept (apart from the app side which could do with being a bit more open) it would of been a lot more agreeable.

I guess the reasoning is they wanted to launch a streaming service, which is quite difficult to lock people into contracts. (No other streaming service does) so they've launched a TV that only really functions if it has a subscription which get's around that issue.

I've always said sky are so far behind the times its shocking if they stuck to content and delivered it well they would be back in the present.

That's my ramble on the subject lol

….. I either feel like I’m being a sky fan boy or I’m making light of your issues, 100% not either , and I feel your pain, when tech isn’t working, it’s a right pain, and that’s putting it politely !!

But all I can say is, other than having to swap out my original screen due to banding , my new one is much much better, I really really do like the system and am not regretting it at all. TBH looking back am not even sure I would have done that, if it not for a few threads on here about banding, so I went looking for it.

@fizzdisco . I wonder whether of the 4/5 you have experience with, in isolation would they all have sent them back? if they know each other and you, was there any confirmation bias or being swayed by another’s opinion?, not saying there was, but it’s an interesting take on it no ?

If I had 3 or 4 other people telling me , no its pants, you’re a plonker…. I might have jumped on the same wave and send it back.

@M3rk Sky Glass ain't bad it's OK my apple tv did all what glass did apart from it didn't really have the Sky part in it, the difference is the AppleTV just worked it worked out of the box when I brought it, no glitches no bugs it just worked, That's because apple make good hardware.

The thing I hate about the Sky ecosystem is it's so closed, it's like you can have our product but we need to blind fold you first, drive you to get it and we can't let you know about it once you have it. Life has moved on, I have Glass because of the content more than the hardware. I was never a fan of Now TV it was pretty poor.

@Anonymous ..for me this just came along at the right time, when we were out of contract with sky and needed a new TV, i wouldn't have sort this out otherwise. Now if apple had made this id have 10 already lol whether they were bad or not or if i needed them or not... i have a bit of an issue when it comes to apple and cant help myself,...lol

Just wanna say to everyone else in the thread with issues, am not saying your problem's are trivial far from it, TBH if id have had the same id be pulling my hair out. think its more the general ones that are squarely down to your own interpretation, picture quality , the EPG, sound... etc.

@M3rk

Your final point nails it - I think the Sky Glass experience varies greatly depending on what your expectations are and what you're coming from.

If you've never had Sky before then I can see how it could be a transformational experience, particularly for those who have good stable broadband.

If you've never had a soundbar/external speaker system or haven't updated your TV in more than five years, then I can see how it could look and sound incredible in comparison.

I really wanted to like it. I really wanted the pucks to be like an Apple TV 4K box with an EPG. I really wanted to think, wow, Sky have really done something good here. But it just wasn't the case.

Of the people I know who had it, I reckon I definitely swayed two of them to get rid of it after trying to help them make their systems work better. But the one common thing between all the people I know who had it, is none of them regret sending it back!
