Privacy Warning

Good morning.

I recently noticed this message under my Sky wifi connection on my iPhone:

'Privacy Warning - This network is blocking encrpyted DNS traffic - the names of websites and other servers your device accesses on this network may be monitored and recorded by other devices on this network'.

Following this, I accessed Google via Safari and received a reCAPTACHA message:

"Our systems have detected unusual traffic from your computer network".

Since receiving this, I have checked my network details and have 4 IPv6 Addresses that I'd not previously seen, which are:

- fd64....

-2a02...

-fe80... (router)

I also have 3 IP connections that aren't associated with any of my devices:

192.168...

224.0....

239.255...

Since I received my Sky Broadband I haven't changed anything associated with the network (I don't have the knowledge) but from reading online it seems that my information may be at risk. Can someone please provide any insight?

Is your Hub located somewhere from which the label carrying the wireless encryption key is visible?

No, my Sky Hub is very much out of sight.

To me that sounds like you may have jsut been issued a dodgy public IP. If you switch your router off for 20mins you'll be issued a new one

It is Sky broadband shield or Sky Buddy and you should review these in relation to unblocking DNS over HTTPS which it is talking about from the Apple client device which was implemented in iOS 15 and above recently.

The domain that you may wish to whitelist is 'doh.dns.apple.com' over TLS port 443 without the single quotes in either Sky broadband shield or Sky Buddy to remove the warning about privacy.

just wondering whether your issue got resolved. I use iPhone and have the same message whilst my wife's android does not . I am just a little concerned at the security/privacy aspect

Some iThings warn users when they are connected to WiFi with less than WPA3 encryption. Unfortunately no large UK ISP currently supply a router with better than WPA2 encryption, so the warning is a bit pointless: WPA2 is still considered adequate by everyone except Apple. In addition, encrypted DNS is not yet in widescale use, although Apple are choosing to promote it.

@Miss+Sharon+F if it is a warning about not having wpa-3 wireless security on the router you can safely ignore it as @TimmyBGood says none of the current ISP supplied routers offer that new standard only recently designed routers do support the new standard and routers generally have lives of over 5 years.

The current wpa2-psk security all Sky hub's use is reasonably secure especially for domestic users who use security software on their devices. Where someone has got access to a neighbour's wifi network it is almost always done by knowing the wifi password but even if they can get access and you have security software and are using an up to date browser your data is safe as it is encrypted. By far the largest security risk is a user responding to a phiishing attack and downloading malware onto their device.

I am having same problem and sky sent me a brand new router with a boost, but message is still coming up when I log into my Wi-Fi😢

The thing is, iOS has been doing this all along with iOS 15. It's just started showing with iOS 15.3. So there will be no change in functionality.

I'm not blocking doh.dns.apple.com and I am using WPA2. So why am I getting the warning?

Your not alone @LGUser i also get the privacy nag on a dedicated wpa3 band,

the strange thing is that the nag is so inconsistent, a simple reboot or dropping over to my wpa2 ov vice versa is enough to clear it, then a few day's later it's back,

although I don't think I've seen it at all since the ipad os 15.3 landed recently.

I'm having the same problem with WiFi Privacy warning popping up on all our apple devices!! I forget the network and then rejoin but it reappears within 24 hours or less. Is everyone saying we should just ignore the message?

@TraceyF110If you had no warnings before this latest IOS update then you should be fine.
