Alternative router options.

Morning all, I'm currently on Sky Superfast with an ER115 located centrally in the hallway. I have a main sky box in one downstairs room and a sky q mini (wireless) in another downstairs room.

Over the past 14 days my Minimum measured speed: 59 Mb/s but my devices are continually dropping out and 2 bedrooms can't get WiFi.

What options do I have to replace the rubbish ER115 and have a decent WiFi mesh system around the house ensuring my sky q mini box still works.

Ok first of all you speed is not as fast as it could be. Can you run tests on my sky app and post the info in more about your connection

On the issue of wifi you can upgrade to broadband boost at £5 pm to get the booster boxes

You can buy a 3rd party mesh system but the sky q and minis will only connect to 2.4ghz wifi

Finally ethernet wifi powerline adapters may work if your house is on the same electric circuit

I am really reluctant to pay sky any kore money after the mess they made with my last renewal.

What will that mean if they will only run on the 2.4ghz?

I think upstair and downstairs sockets are on different rings when we had a rewire.

Back onto the wifi. I forgot to add that you can get rid of the er115 totally by getting a modem bridge such as tp link td w9970

Instructions for setting up tp link td w9970 as modem bridge

select sky vdsl from isp list

My other concern is i am about to add video doorbell and cctv and the ER115 does not seem reliable enough to handle any more devices with it already keep dropping out.

@cookiemonsteruk your post on replacing the ER115 appears to have disappeared as I was reading it.

So does the TP-Link replace the ER115 the the Asus plug in via the LAN and then that's what all my devices connect to?

With this give me.a stronger more reliable WiFi compared to the ER115?

The tp link is a modem and the asus are routers that can be configured to authenticate with sky servers negating the need for the er115. Again the sky q equipment will only run on 2.4ghz. The reason i mention that is it is more prone to interference from neighbouring ssid's

How likely is interference as the sky q mini is the main box we use as I couldn't hardwire the old one or this to the new location.

I see amazon sell the sr203. Is that just plug and play? Can I buy it and use it and will it be better than the ER115?

Would strongly advise against buying the sr203. These are loan equipment and should never be for sale. Sky would have a record of it not being returned and there would be a risk of sky rendering it useless

Really appreciate your advice. If i go down the TP-Link & Asus route, with the sky q mininbeing our main box we use, how much problem is the 2.4 limitation going to cause?

Use a mobile and see if there are other ssids. Just one would be fine as there would be sufficient channels to change to.. 2 other ssids along with your own may cover the whole spectrum. Ie you ssid on say channel 6 could occupy 2 channels either side of 6 and other ssids doing the same. Also in addition to interference 2.4ghz is a slower band offering a fraction of the router speed to the minis
