Sky FTTP and VoIP using FRITZ!Box 7490

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can advise me about configuring a new Sky FTTP setup?

Scenario

I have just ordered Sky FTTP with a go-live date next week.

Currently I am with Zen FTTP (3.5yr old Openreach Huawei single port ONT) with separate copper cable POTS. The POTS landline number will migrate to VoIP next week. I already have one VoIP number provided by Sipgate that is configured on my FRITZ!Box 7490 router. The FRITZ!Box 7490 router is connected to the ONT and also wired to two FRITZ!Box 3490s as mesh repeaters.

Question

It would be ideal for me to use the FRITZ!Box 7490 instead of the Sky router as it already hosts my Sipgate number and works well with the mesh system. For this to work I would need to (1) be able to authenticate to Sky's servers for the WAN connection and (2) add the VoIP number migrated from POTS to the FRITZ!Box 7490. Calls could then be answered using theFRITZ Fon app.

I realise this is a bit premature, but once the change in FTTP provider happens, I need to get things set up quickly and so I'd like to undertand enough to have worked out a plan. I'm not optimistic however.

Re (1), I saw discussion 3677690 about using IPV6 to avoid DHCP 60/61 issues. The IPV6 screen for the FRITZ!Box is below and so might just enabling IPV6 work? (It's currently disabled for Zen).

I couldn't find anything about (2) in the forum.

If the POTs number currently on copper is migrating to Sky Talk over VOIP, as one would expect with ordering FTTP from Sky, there's no known configuration to enable the use of anything other than the 'phone' port on a Sky Broadband Hub. Users of other routers on Sky FTTP and G.fast effectively lose access to their 'landline' number.

You wont be able to use the Sky Voip number on the fritz box, its built into the Sky hub and Sky network and nobody knows how to get it working on a non Sky hub.

You also wont be able to configure your SIPGATE line on the Sky hub either so for your current setup to work it looks like you'll have to run both routers at the same time

As I've ordered and the port is in progress I think I have to let it happen and use the phone socket on the Sky router to start with.

One potential solution in the future is to port my original POTS landline number to Sipgate from Sky which would require a new phone number to be associated with the Sky broadband service service. Is this possible of would it scupper the FTTP broadband?

Thanks @jamesn123. I had also spoken to Sky technical support yesterday and they said the same.

This means that I would have to use the Sky router to access my 'landline' number for a considerable time, until I moved away from Sky after the contract ended. I think this would be clunky and inflexible.

Solution

I have canceled the move to Sky so that I can separate out FTTP broadband from VoIP phone (which my existing provider will allow) before reconsidering a change of boroadband provider.
