Total power draw of – Sky router & ONT?

Hello All

Does anyone happen to know what the total power draw in Watts or Volt-Amps is for each of the units below:

Sky SR203
Openreach Nokia ONT (1 Port)

I can’t seem to easily find this info anywhere after a good search and want to get the correct specification of UPS based on this.

As both the Hub and the ONT have an integrated plug/transformer, the power rating should be marked on the plugs themselves. The total will be tiny: far less than the inefficiency of any UPS (and actual power draw far lower than that marked).

Below are the figures I’ve found.

Sky SR203 – 12V / 1.42A / 17W
Openreach ONT – 12v / 1.0A / 12W

So based on the stated Watts being maximums, if I overestimate both units to 40w max, then I should get approximately 60 minutes minimum run time from the following APC UPS: (https://www.apc.com/shop/uk/en/products/APC-Back-UPS-ES-400VA-230V-8-BS1363-outlets-4-surge-/P-BE400-UK).

As most of our power cuts are less than an hour (based on historical experience 5 minutes or less), 60 minutes gives us enough time to finish work Skype calls etc and check the power company website for updates and send emails.

400VA is 400W and therefore you should get 10 hours of backup from that UPS which is a little overkill!

We had one of those onsite here for many years: the battery eventually lost its ability to hold any useful charge and it was cheaper to replace the whole thing than just the cells.

I have my SR203 powered from a PoE splitter. POE switch then the box pulls the 48v off the cable to 12v. So my router is powered from the switch itself.

Needed a 5.5x2.1mm to 3.9x1.9mm adapter to fit the smaller 12v socket on the router.

Spec of splitter is 12v 12W. It works fine, so guess router draws 12w or less.

It's not quite that straight forward because the power factor which for a UPS is typically 0.8, so a 400VA UPS is 320W. The biggest factor that determines runtime is the battery performance which varyies depending the the battery's construction.

I have a 650VA UPS with a 40W load on it and the runtime on battery is around 50 minutes.

Router - 8W - PF 0.5 - 0.8

Router - 2W - PF 0.3ish

Just measured mine while idling using cheap (maybe inaccurate) plug in mains power meter.

Sk router - 8W - PF 0.5 - 0.8

Nokia Modem - 2W - PF 0.3ish

Matches my readings

I swapped my cheap 802.3af PoE splitter. For a better 802.3at which can do 30W. But more importantly it can share the actual draw with the switch its poweres from.

Sky hub is 6-8W. At 12v
