Replacing rubbish SR203 router - How to Obtain PPOE Information?

Hello,

I have recently purchased an Asus RT-AC85P router to replace our SKY SR203 router which has been shambles.

When trying to set this to automatic network discovery, I recieve an error stating "Your ISPs DHCP does not function properly"

When trying PPOE with a few usernames/passwords I have found online it states that those credentials are incorrect. Trying to contact sky support and explain what i'm trying to do feels like banging my head against a brick wall and getting nowhere. Anyone know how to obtain this information or whether this device above should work?

I may add that its an RJ45 from the wall into the router and the outside of the house has recently had a box installed (FTTH) superfast I believe.

If you on fttp superfast or ultrafast speed the router must support dhcp option 61

Asus lists this as client identifier (option 61) in the format

anything@skydsl|anything

Can't seem to find the DHCP Option 61 on this router anywhere - do you have any idea as to where in the setting this may be?

Have you updated the asus firmware whilst etherneted to sky hub ?

Client identifier (option 61) should be in the wan settings screen

I havent done that no - though looking at the Merlin Fireware this router isnt supported so will send it back and get a replacement.

Could you recommend one that could fully replace the exsiting Sky SR203 Modem/Router?

Not too fussed about brand, just a well known one with good wireless range.

I am a big fan of all things asus

At the moment i have the asus rt ax58u, a few have the rt ax88u and one has the zenwifi xt8. These are all wifi 6 ax routers compatible with sky either on stock firmware or asus merlin that can cover serious space. Prices range from £139 for the ax58u up to >£250 for the ax88u

@Kknott66 yes , but look at the ax ones they can acheive close to ethernet speeds throughout a 2200sq ft area in conjunction with wifi 6 devices without the need for ethernet. The aimesh function allows the configuration of mesh nodes for medium to large houses >2200sq ft

Found two, the ASUS RT-AX 56U and the ASUS RT-AX 68U

Which of the two would you recommend? They seem to be around the same price (assuming they are both ok to replace the SR203 anyway).

Just to add, I do not wish to use the SR203 at all... and im looking to use the replacement RT-AX standalone.

I have seen from your signature you are using your wireless router in conjuction with your sky modem but do no wish to have this setup for myself! 🙂

The rt ax56u has 1800 Mbps of lan mesh bandwidth the rt ax68u has 2700Mbps i think

I thought to 56u was around £100 and 68u around £160

The 56u has aiprotection and the 68u has aiprotection pro security software and the ax 68u has adaptive qos

It all depends on you requirements . I find the rt ax58u has all the features of the ax68u and better value. But out off the 2 you mentioned i'd go for the rt ax68u and they are both sky compatible

Mine is a backup at the minute but is perfectly suited as a full replacement for the sr203

How do you connect a thrid party HRD compatible router to be used as a modem to replace the Sky router? Don't you need a username/password to use the router as a modem?

We are due to eventually get full fibre installed here. Sowould Ibe ableto use the ASUS rt ax68u to run the Intetnet connection? Once we have the infrastructure connected, I'm going to order the 500mbps service from Sky.

Absolutely yes. The ethernet cable from the ont plugs into the blue wan port of the asus complete client identifier (option 61) and away you go

Thanks. That's brilliant. I had alook and the price of the Asus is not too expensive. nd if it gives as good a signal as it claims, I would get a good signal throughout.

Very strong signal on the wifi 6 ax side and a better signal of the wifi 5 ac in comparison to the sky sr203 hub

Why I has the sr293 hub setup in our previous flat, it was OK.But nothing special. Then there was the issue when Sky updated the firware that prevented the use of DNS other then Sky's. Had to call Sky to get them to roll back the firmware. At least with a third party modem/router, those sort of things would not happen.
