Wifi coverage

Hi, I am having issues with my Sky wifi reaching and maintaining connections with my two Ring doorbells. The front door is approx 2m from the router and I use a TP link extender, which is plugged in about halfway between the two devices. The doorbell is always saying its not receiving a signal, so I have to take the battery out and try to reconnect that way, it works for a day or two then I start the process all over again. There is one brick wall in the way, but I cant believe that is causing the problem.

The second doorbell is some 14m+ away down the back garden, there is another TP Link extender in the garage next to the bell, this fails a lot less, but typically will not always notify of alerts.

Both Ring bells stat an RSSI of around 50-60 which I thought should be a lot better.

So, i've bought an ASUS -AC86U to try and improve wifi coverage ( and speed) but realise I now need a modem of sorts. OR

My contract with Sky is up in February, I've considered going back to Virgin, but I'm not convinced their router is any more powerful, although the speeds are, which may make a difference.

can anyone offer any solutions or work arounds please. Thx

correction, the front door bell is approx 8m from the router.

What speeds are you getting?

i.e. are you superfast or ultrafast g.fast or fttp?

Below is how you turn the tp link td w9970 into a standalone vdsl modem

Instructions for setting up tp link td w9970 as modem bridge

select sky vdsl from isp list

If you are g.fast i don't know what g.fast modems are about

If you are ultrafast fttp you don't need a modem

Hi, thanks for the response.

I'm on superfast, the Sky app shows 79mb/s but it always does. Various wifi speed checkers (using my iphone) show 63+ when I'm by the router, only 30+ outside by the front doorbell and only 14+ by the rear gate doorbell.

Do you believe that the ASUS and modem bridge combined, will increase those speeds/coverage sufficiently?

The asus routers use beamforming to locate the devices and intelligently locate the best ways of getting the signal to the device. So yes from experience the 2.4ghz and 5ghz wifi is far stronger than the sky hub.

apologies to be a pain, but I cant seem to get the W9970 to connect to the internet, so as yet cant get to the modem only mode page.

Its connected to the Sky hub via eth cable, I'm using the TP link app as Ialready have it for the extender, but it just keeps saying 'routers connection with the internet' big red cross.

Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong, or point me in the right directions.

The tp link and asus will totally replace the sky hub

Plug the tp link directly into the mastersocket and follow the instructions to the letter using the tether app

If that fails you may need to set it up via an ethernet device

it's plugged into the master socket and either way via app or laptop it keeps saying it's not connected. I've tried also using an eth cable from the sky router to see if that helped but it hasn't.
I'm at a loss. Thought it would be more straight forward. Thoughts?

Where it says "internet connection type" click the drop down you should see a "bridge" option . Select "bridge"

Have you been thru the rest of the quick set up

Hi, yeah I've managed, I think to get past that part and set up as bridge.

I've also set the ASUS up but now can remember the sign in and I can't see a way to request or reset it 🤷🏻‍♂️ Despite that, it still said no Internet connection.

On the qis or wan screen there should be a "client identifier (option 61)" field enter anything@skydsl|anything , also mtu is 1500 , query frequency is nornal. If it asks for vlan id again just enter 101

Also you have 3 wireless clients . There shouldn't be any . I don't think you've followed all instructions on the quick set up. wireless needs to be disabled on the tp link

Thx but the only option it shows me out of what you e said is the MTU and it won't allow 1500, is says max is 1492

Are you in ireland?

In the uk dhcp option 61 client identifier is used and you're pppoe. But its a bit premature going as far down the line as that

Can you please post the image of the tp link "quick setup" screen

There should be no wifi option . You are using the tp link as a modem only without any routing capabilities.

As far as i can see if you follow the quick setup instructions sequentially it will lead you thru all that anyway

If I choose Sky then I don't get the bridge option so have to choose 'other'. Can that be affecting anything?

if not, then it's the ASUS, as the internet light is red and I don't get the options you've indicated.
